I have heard from some people that they are very rude and harsh, but from other people that they are very generous and friendly. ??

After living there for 20 months, and planning on moving there permanently. I can safely say that they are not harsh and rude. The person who said that.. mistakened the brash, truthfullness of the Aussies. They are honest and tell their true feelings. They enjoy doing that to Yanks "Americans", because we take offense so easily.

They are frienndly and are more friendly than brash. Here in the states, your neighbor doesn't wave to you anymore (depending on where). There, my enighbor from across the street, waved every morning and when my car was broken down, came over to see if there was anything he could do. My neighbors next door to me on either side, wave, joke, talk, invite us to their parties and gatherings, etc....
I guess it would have to depend on where you are. In my experience, I met more friendly and generous than rude and harsh.. and the rude and harshness was just poking fun and brash honesty.

Australians are very friendly. In fact, when I travel (particularly in Europe but also the USA) I find most other people to be withdrawn and uncommunicative compared to home. If you start a conversation with an Australian it will almost always be reciprocated.

One problem that Americans have is that the Australian sense of humour does not come with canned laughter. An Australian may be having a joke with you with a completely straight face. Other Australians get it, but Americans often don't. The American and Australian senses of humour are very different.

Are there clouds in the sky? Yes, no, sometimes, etc.
Depends, doesn't it? Kind of like trying to determine whether an entire nation of 20 million are all friendly.
I would say the big difference between Australians and other nationalities though is that the majority of Australians would help you out if you needed it.... not something I've seen so much overseas.
And to xiy and any other convict comments I've read, the criminal element in Australia are direct descendants of the 19th century Americans who rushed to the country as sealers and prospectors when gold was discovered. Convicts were generally transported for lame reasons and weren't hard-core criminals
True story!

I LOVE Australians, they are the most kind and generous and loving people. You know that they've had to put counsillors into the Australia schools because of Steve Irwin dying? Everyone is genuinely upset. That shows they're kindness. I went 2 years ago to Melbourne on my own to live with my Aunty and Uncle for 5 weeks, and my Uncle took me to Sydney and it's beautiful, there's no pushing or shoving, it's brilliant. Have fun:D

THATS WHAT IT WAS! I was in Bendigo and went to this Dingo place and the guy said that they don't bite and this Dingo tried taking my hand off!

They're some of the friendliest and funniest people in the world.

My friend went to Aus and she and her friend needed to catch a ferry to some island but they had no idea where the port was in the town. So they ended up in some local bar and asked the bar lady. Within a min she'd shouted in the whole bar "girls need a lift" and the got offers from like nearly everyone in the bar. My friend assured me that it wasn't just guys, but ladies too. In the end one guy said he was on his lunch break but he would give em a lift since he knew the quickest way to get there. Not only did he get there in time, he got the owner of the boat (who he knew) to look after them and they ended up getting a free meal.

Personally, whilst travelling i met a few aussies and I can honestly tell you that i've never laughed so hard than when i was drunk with these guys. Awesome people

Some are too friendly with stingrays...
Australians are people just like everyone on the planet: some are friendly, some aren't depending on who they're dealing with and if they're having a bad day.

They tend to be friendly.....except Mel Gibson, when he's had too much to drink. I just think they are no different than any other nationality.
Just like New Yorkers. I'm sure there are 2 or 3 nice ones
