Oh goodness no it is not.

People forget their manners there. Everyone is Someone. Includes, those who live or work in LA, Beverly Hills or Hollywood is "someone" in the business. But really they might only be a PA or something similar.

The bouncers and related club staff suffer from Velvet Rope Syndrome, which means they won't let you pass the velvet rope, into their club, because you're not good enough for them. I ask, who are you to please? Oh right, you're "someone." Btw, I was even on the guest list when this happened to me.

Never mind the drivers. I once was pulling into a parking spot, when another person (who had a better car than mine), try to convince me to go find another spot because he wanted THAT spot. He went on and on about being "someone" and how he deserved that spot more than me. In this case, a camera man at NBC Studios. Why does a so-called camera man, who claims to work at NBC not have a NBC parking pass?

I am not bitter, simply stating the facts.

The media shows you only what looks good. For example, with San Francisco they always show palm trees and the Golden Gate Bridge. Anyone who lives in SF never uses the Golden Gate bridge. They should be showing the Bay Bridge, but then again it isn't painted a bright color.

The beaches are nice; the weather is usually good. The streets and freeways are crowded, almost all day. There are poor and crime-prone areas. There are beautiful and gated areas. But these areas can be separated by mere city blocks. Most of it is somewhere in between. There are trendy places where you're likely to spot celebrities attempting to be normal. Of course these trendy areas kind of shift over the years and what was once hot, now is not. There are plenty of places to eat, drink and be merry. And just as many ways to entertain yourself. You're surrounded by mountains & beaches. You're bound to find something interesting. The people are just as diverse. Most of them will probably be friendly, except when driving. At which time they become totally pyschotic. Just wait for them to come to a full and complete stop. Then give them 5 minutes.

In short, the paradise you see through the media camera lens is really just a very narrow and selective view.

I lived in LA for 10 years and loved it. It's nothing like the paradise it's made out to be. It's urban sprawl at its worst, poorly planned, and at times smoggy. Once you get to know the place, though, you find that it also has tremendous natural beauty (the beach, the Santa Monica mountains) and a lot of real culture (you just need to know where to look)! If you drive up the Pacific Coast Highway toward Malibu (or beyond to Point Dume), it's just spectacular. Similarly, if you go down to Dana Point and stand on top of the cliffs, staring down at the surfers, you do feel transported.

Here's the thing- LA is HUGE. People from other parts of the country don't really understand the concept. My boyfriend is from NY. He's used to a big city, but LA is very different, its big and spread out over a very large area. He didn't really get it until he finally got to explore it. It can take you over an hour to go 10 miles. TV & movies like to focus on the cleaner & more glamorous areas, but you can be cruising through what looks like a great area and turn the corner and be in the 'hood.

In LA:
-not everyone is a star. People still need their Starbucks and McDonalds & people to work there.
-most people are in debt up to their eyeballs trying to keep up with the Jones' & live a lifestyle that they think they're supposed to (usually non-Native Californians)
-Hwood tends to omit a huge part of the population. Given the proximity to Mexico, about 50% of the population is Hispanic.
-the beaches are great- as long as it's not June- August and there is not a sewage spill that closes them down.
-Traffic is a beeeyatch! Boston, NY, DC- you ain't seen nuthin'! The only time I haven't seen traffic on the 101 is at 5am on a Sunday.
-There are really great places to eat. SoCal has a ton of fantastic Mexican places and many local chains.
-Real Estate is ridiculous but, the property taxes are extremely low. However, the effect of low property taxes is crappy schools, parks and roads.
-Rent is ridiculous

Like anywhere else, there are really cool things and there are really crappy things and it is absolutely NOTHING like how its portrayed in the media.

Just remember the Chamber of Commerce mind set. Sell, sell, sell.Destination marketing is a huge business throughout the world and Los Angeles and environs competes heavily for tourism dollars. No place in the world is the utopia the four-color brochure leads you to believe. Great place to visit.

Paradise? Hardly. It's got the worst air pollution in the nation, is crowded, filthy, you'll be stuck in traffic for hours, and people are rude. Does that sounds like paradise to you? Try outside of LA, like San Gabriel or Pasadena... that area is much nicer.
