I know what the internet and manufacturers say, but I'm interested in what other people have to say.

I've heard it can be very effective, but have not heard of any properly conducted tests that would show how effective it is with different kinds of depression and different levels of severity. I do know you are not supposed to take it if you are using a prescribed medicine from your doctor, nor is it supposed to be taken for longer than a maximum of eight weeks at a time. I believe you should have a break of at least a month before resuming it, but am not sure if the break should be longer. In any case, you shouldn't let yourself become dependent on it, and I think really addressing the heart of any problems, e.g. through professional therapy, would be better if the depression was long-standing or very severe.

Don't know if this is relevant to you, but St Johns Wort can effect the contraceptive pill.

Also you would need to take St Johns Wort for approx 3 weeks before you would notice any improvement in your condition.

I'm surprised at all the negative results. I abandoned my SSRI (Effexor) because I hated the side effects and went to St. John's Wort. I was on it for 8-10 years and it worked brilliantly for me. No side effects, and it alleviated my depression. Because it is gentle, it does take 2-3 weeks to kick in. An awful lot of people benefit from it - at least give it a try and see how it works for you. It's not expensive.

I took SJW for the beginning of my depression to self medicate, I went on a weeks break at the south coast of UK and had a lovely walk along the clifftops (no not to jump), that evening in the pub I noticed my exposed upper chest, neck and face where red and tingling, and I turned redder that a beetroot, photo-sensitivity is a side affect and was like really bad sunburn and looked very odd..
moral: take care in the sun its on the label.
