i heard that the reason why america is sooooo FAT is because we use bigger plates and use bigger proportions to fill those plates. If we were to get smaller plates and fill that up, we would be feeding ourselves less. Therefore we lose weight. is it true?

The idea is that it tricks your eye into thinking that you are eating larger portions. We do eat way too much... everything is super sized. If you put proper portions on a "big" plate, it makes you feel like you're being cheated. Putting the same amount on a smaller plate looks like a lot more, and you "trick" yourself into eating less.... That is unless you go back for seconds and thirds! ;-) Eating slower also helps your blood sugar regulate. It give your stomach time to signal your brain that food is coming and and to turn off your hunger pangs.

Labelling use of plates that are "too big" as THE cause of societal obesity is a bit simplistic. I think the issue is bigger and more complex than that. Over-consumption generally and over-consumption of the "wrong" kind of calories specifically coupled with an insufficient compensatory expenditure of energy is the problem, but this is only the "conclusion" entailed by a mountain of premises. Depending on how visually oriented you are, using a smaller measuring device (9" plate) to determine a serving (a portion, a meal, etc) can work but, to put the matter simply, only if you don't fill up the plate multiple times. There's no difference between filling up a 18" plate once or a 9" plate twice.

This is a true statement. Many people do not want to waste food so they tend to eat everything on their plate. By offering a smaller plate you trick the brain into thinking you are eating the same amount of food. It really works..

The only way one can lose weight is to cut down on caloric intake. It doesn't matter if you put those calories on a 9-inch or 14-inch platter.
