Ask them what breed they WOULD approve..there are many wonderful breeds for a true dog lover..
Volunteer at your local shelter, and if you find the dog of your dreams, ask your parents of you can be a foster home for it... they will see just how well..or not..it works out, without major commitment..

Pit bulls take a lot of work, they are a very smart, but a very stubborn breed. Training needs to begin right away, and you need to be diligent. If you are in school 8 hours a day, this probably will not work. And with the stigma around Am. Staffs and other bully breeds, it's best to have a very well trained pit, that is raised as a family dog.
It's also illegal in most states to own a pit if you are under 18, so your parents are ultimately responsible for the dog.

Your parent's home owner insurance will also go up, so this may be another factor.

First of all, I am so tired about reading and hearing negative comments about Pitbulls. These are just ignorant people that all they do is talk about the bad reputation that unresponsible pitbull owners have set for not raising their dogs the proper way, and making them become aggressive. Personally I feel very happy and satisfied with my pitbull puppy "Brownie" that barely turned 3 months yesterday. He is the most adorable, loving, and smart dog I've ever met or had. He is smart enough that when I or any other adult plays with him, he will start biting, but if its my little nieces that are both younger then 5 years old, then he will not bite them (not even lick them) Even when they tease him, he will not be aggressive with them. Pit bulls are one of the most intelligent dog breeds (even smarter then a german shepherd i use own). I know some individuals that own red, blue nose, and american pits and they say that their dogs would never be a watch dog because they won't be aggressive enough. Its up to the owner if he/she decides to raise an aggressive dog, but if you want a pit bull and want the dog to be nice when it grows up, then you got to make him grow up that way as well. Just keep in mind that pits are also sweet family dogs. Trust me, if not, look up sites on the internet that proves how sweet they are and show the photos and stories to your parents. Good luck buddy, I got my pit bull puppy after almost 2 years of wanting one. .He's my baby now :)

Why do you want a pitbull? Is it because of the status, having a "dangerous dog", or because you want to impress people? Or because some rap star or pro athlete has one? These are not good reasons for getting a dog. Perhaps you should do some research and find a breed more suited for a family environment. Pitbulls need diligent training, you must constantly be on your guard, and it most states, it is against the law for someone under eighteen to even walk them down the street. BSL-Breed Specific Legislation requires homeowners to carry extra insurance if they own what are classified as "notoriously aggressive dogs". Pitbulls, even ones raised in a loving environment, can be temperamental, and have been known to turn on their owners. Do you really want to take responsibility for someone being seriously injured or even killed just because you think it's "cool" to own a pitbull? Your parents are probably right. Get a goldfish, their less work!

i in no way mean to insult you, but the more research you do, you will find out that if you still have to ask your parents for a dog, you are way too busy being a kid to be able to give a pit bull the attention it needs. get a lab or something, then a pit when you are on your own if you still want.

First, why do you want a pit bull? Second, do online searches to find out all you can about this breed, then talk to your parents about the reason for wanting one and the positive traits this breed offers. But be honest and also mention the negative.

If they still refuse to let you have one, ask them what other breed they might consider. Remember, dear...it IS their house and they'll be the ones footing the bills for medical and dental expenses, not to mention nutritional needs.

A win-win situation is always better than one that's a win-lose.

I have a pit bull. It is the BEST dog in the world. But, we deal with a lot of stigma. People are terrified of my precious pooch. Also, insurance can be higher for dogs with bad reputations. You may want to settle on a less controversial dog until it is just your problem, not your parents.

Go to some breed specific forums and gather info on the breed .Show it to your parents on how a true APBT truely is.Ask lots of questions. These people although can be extreme have a lot of Pit Bull knowledge. This breed is not for everyone ,and you need to be ready to take on the responsibility of such a dog if your parents decide you can have one.

Their house, their rules. If you want a pit bull, move out and pay the bills.

Pitbulls are good dogs if raised properly and well socialized..Kinda means ya can't tie him out back and feed when ya feel like it,most end up like that because of their size and hyperness, its a bad thing...They are very territorial..means someone stands outside your yard their fine, step in their hurt..
A few years back, a pitbull got out of his yard and attacked a 10 yr old girl, she died..the owners were charged with death, and are in jail right now..So i can understand your parents not wanting this type of dog..Some say any dog can get out and bite but that dog bit and broke that child..
