Take a picture of the hallway with the kids that you will have in the background. Then later take a picture of just you and your g/f in the hallway. Create a new image pasting the image with the kids as the background and the image of you and your g/f as another layer. Use your masking tool to mask out parts of the upper layer that you do not want to make visible thereby creating the illusion that you and the kids were there at the same time. with the kids in a different layer you can fade/desaturate the background layer to get the effect you want..

Or, (lol) you could take a single picture and using one of your selection tools select the area of the picture containing you and your girlfriend. Then invert the selection and fade and desaturate the rest of the image.

I'm assuming you are using Photoshop or similar tool

Oof. This is a fun question. for the kids in the background to be faded out use a large (number) fstop, so the hole will be small. This depends on what kind of camera you're using. The instructions above are for a traditional manual camera.
For digital cameras, what i would do is just take the picture and open it in photoshop and blur the people in the background :)

There are a couple of different ways. The camera will usually focus on the immediate subject all by itself. The background will have a slight blur to it with no real trying on your part. Black and white is easier, depending on whether you're digital or film. Either black and white film or adjust it with your Printing program. Good luck from a fellow photographer!!

its actually not that difficult with any decent image editing software. all you are going to do is have two layers. the back layer you will take the colour out of and and the top layer you don't touch. Photoshop CS2 is great for this type of stuff.

That could be accomplished in Photoshop (or other photo editing software), but you'd have to be at least an intermediate level user.

do a shot of just you and your GF alone on a white bg, then a shot of the hallway, scan the prints or negs and merge in photoshop.
