My dad and I found a dog that we want to adopt from a shelter in Panama City Florida. We live in rural Maine and we are not sure how to get him here. It would cost a lot to drive down there to get her. Does anyone know how much it would cost to fly her up here? Or does anyone know of any organizations that help to transport pets to different places?

The first thing to do is see if the shelter will even adopt out of area. Some shelters are very strict about that. Some absolutely will not ship an animal, especially flying. I do believe that there is a rescue group that does transport like you are talking about, I think they are called "Trucks-n-paws". I volunteer with a rescue and we have used them. They may be willing to transport for a "donation" of some sort.

Transporting an animal is usually $250 and up. But, most local and state shelters will NOT ship an animal. Most do require you to be a local resident in order to adopt. If it is a breed rescue then you might have a shot. But even then a lot of rescues like to keep their adoptee's at least within a few hours drive.

I'm sorry, but I doubt you will be able to adopt him. If you can, your best bet is to actually drive down there (take a vacation or something so you can do more than pick him up.) I have done rescue work, and we would never ship an animal that far for adoption.

Just thought I'd clarify what I said. Most SPCA's and human societies will not ship an animal. Privately run rescues make up their own rules and may ship if they feel you are a good match for the dog. Shipping via plane is usually $250 and over, I've never used any of the 'rescue shippers' so I'm not sure what they cost. My guess is a lot for a 30 hour drive.

Did you find this dog at a shelter listed on petfinder.com Usually when you adopt from a rescue/shelter on the petfinder.com list a shelter will try and work with you to transport. It is all done with volunteers.Jjust recently a dog was adopted from a rescue in Tn. and transported to the state of Washington. I read about it on their homepage. It took 4 days and three overnights and 20 volunteers. Ask the shelter if they can arrange a transport. They will need to contact a transport coordinator and someone to monitor the journey once it is underway and you will be asked to participate by taking at least a 1 or 2 hr roadtrip to get him. Flying would definitely be out of the question since the airlines do not fly pets when the temps are over 80 or 85 degrees. Hope that helped you. Lots of luck.

If the animal shelter will allow adoptions outside the area, probably the best method would be to use an animal transport service. These services can arrange to either have the animal shipped over land or by air. Some use volunteer drivers, while others will use accompanied air travel, so that if the dog is small enough it could even be with someone during the trip. These agencies are aware of all of the ins and outs of airline regulations regarding animal travel, so they can help arrange everything. I've never used one, but here are the Web sites for three:

Yes, there are some organizations that provide pet transportation. Sorry I can't recall the name of the one I saw on TV about a year ago. Ask your local shelters if they know of any of these orgs in your area. Also ask the shelter the dog is in for advice on how to get the animal to you.

If it is a purebred, check the rescue organization for that breed. A lot of times they will help with the transport.

It would cost far less to drive...shipping is expensive.. You might run an ad in the paper, for anyone going to FL to share expenses if they bring back your dog..
there is a site that posts such ads for share travel..If I can findi it, I will post it here..
