Just like how cow's farts are breaking down the ozone layer, the potatoes in the bag of chips are actually farting. That's why it smells. Most people attibute the smell to someone they are near when they open the bag, nope-its the chips.
Potatoes are a sugary, starchy type of food and when its cooked in oil, then quickly bagged and sealed (for freshness), the bag heats up and expands-but its sealed...
When the bag is opened, its like a fart *POOF*. All those starchy, sugary, hot gasses building up in the sealed bag.

Because what goes in is what comes out. Maybe it's your farts that smell like potato chips, not the other way around.

Never thought of it that way. But I just opened a bag of Lays Sour Cream and Onion, and you're right. That's totally disturbing. I may never be able to look another bag of chips in the eye, metaphorically speaking......

Hmm, I do know that they fill the bags with some special gas I think nitrogen it helps the chips stay fresh. I am wondering what brand of chips you are eating though?

It's the gas they put in the bags to help maintain the freshness of the chip.

Those aren't potato chips. Read the bag first and I sure hope you didn't eat them.

Chips ingredients mixed with the carbon dioxide they use to cushion the chips may cause this smell.

I don't know. But things that are bagged usually have a funky smell if you take a whiff of it right after you open it. Good question!

Where in the world are you buying your chips for? You must be eating those strange chips from the UK that taste like liver and onions.
