Yes you are. We really appreciate all the location information, it really helps to understand the problem. Leaving a dog at home, locked up, that is not house trained is cruel, even house trained its cruel, I would say three cheers for Rory, he gave you what you deserved.

Well, first of all dogs don't have the ability to get angry with their owners. Your giving him a human characteristic. Get a crate for him to stay in while you are not there. If he poops in it, he will eventually learn that he has to sit in it until you get home to clean it up and he'll stop pooping. My great dane is 9 years old, I've used a crate for her since she was 8 weeks old and it's great. She even goes in it when we are home, just to nap or lay down. You will have to shell out between $200 and $300 but it will be well worth it. I have recently joined a forum for great dane owners. It's called danetalkers.com. The people on there are so knowledgeable about the breed, and there are some people on there that have had danes for years. You should check it out! :)
P.S. To some of the others who have comented on this question: You can't punish a dog for something you didn't witness. She can't go back and punish the dog for making a mess that was made hours before, he won't understand why he is getting punished so it won't help. Also, kenneling is not cruel. It is cruel to allow a dog to run free in a house and be destructive, and possibly injure or kill himself by gettiing into cleaners etc.

A dog should not be alone for more than 5 hours, see if you can find a dog walker when you have to be gone that long. Make sure it is someone who can handle your dog if you do, or get a high-school kid to come by, if possible, to play with the dog. Doggie daycare is also an option you can use. Kennelling is perfectly acceptable if you are gone for 6 or less hours. Also time your dogs feeding so his movements occur at a convenient time, Different breeds process food at different rates so I can't help there, but check with your vet.

you should train your dog not to poop in the house. a 5 year old dog should know better. if your dog has done this more than once you should punish him for his actions to let him know that is no way to get paybackand. you probably shouldnt leave him in the house all day either it wont help the situation and you might have to make him get use to waiting until you get back. that or set up a doggy poopy station like you do for puppies while you are gone. i did this with my dog and it works. also try putting him in his cage while you are gone

Danes are people dogs. They don't like it when the pack leader, you, leaves. When they are upset, they do go more.
I think that you should get a crate for the times that you are not home. You might also discuss separation anxiety with the vet. They do have meds that can be given.

My dog does this. I have tried everything and finally resorted to the thing I hate most: kenneling. I have to kennel her up in a cage while I'm gone because she tears everything up and poops everywhere. Once they start this behavior it is nearly impossible to break them of it. You may have to kennel Rory up while you're gone.

Can you get Rory a friend to keep him company so he is not alone? Or confine him to one room while you are not there? Or better yet (in Rory's opinion I am sure) just never leave! : )

i have two Danes aren't they awesome! anyway we had to invest in two very large crates that take up most of our bedroom because if we left them alone loose for more than an hour they would eat our house, literally. otherwise they are angels. i would get him a crate. and feed him at least two hours before you leave to ensure he has a chance to get it all out before your gone.
