The first thing I try when that happens ( I do cat rescue) is a litter called "Cat Attract". It is about 12 dollars for the bag, but it is desinged to attract the cats to the litter box. It really does work as long as the cat does not have a medical problem. If the litter dosen't work, then you need to find out if the cat has something like a urinary tract infection. That will cause them to go outside the litter box.

But I really urge you to try the cat attrack! It has saved me a lot of heart ache and money. You don't have to keep using it, just one or two bags to make sure that they get the idea and they should be fine.

Like I said, if that doesn't work then it would be off to the vet to see what could be wrong medically!!!

Good Luck.

If you clean out the box everyday and change the litter box every week and your still having problems then if its a male you could have him fixed sometimes a male does that to mark his territory especially if a female in heat is nearby my male cat was doing that and after I got him fixed I never had anymore problems with him also make sure you use a good product to remove the urine smell a good source is a box of boraxo wet the area where the stain is pour enough of the boraxo to cover it let it sit until it dries and vacuum it up odors will be gone

the best thing to do would be to change the carpet. cat's tend to pee in the same spot. if you completely elimate the odor, he probably won't go there again. but since changing a carpet is pretty extreme, i would deep clean the spots that he goes on as best as possible and always make sure the litter box is fresh.

Is the litter box clean? Cats won't use a dirty litter box.

Get a product call Felway. It is a hormone which you spray on the spot where the cat is peeing. Because it is a hormone which reminds the cat of its mother, it will stop going there.
