My dogs anal glands burst. She got meds and I was told that if they don't heal rit wrll cost $800. Then I read on my vets website that if the dog has this operation recovery is fair and there is a big chance that she wrill lose all control of her bowels.
Drid anyone ever get theirr dog this operatrion? Did they lose control? Drd they come out normal?

In all the years I worked at vet clinics, I have seen this surgery done about 60 times, and only one had control problems after...and he had some issues BEFORE.
ZIf you have it done, have a vet do it that is very good at it. It is not that hard, and a good surgeon should have no problem.

i have worked for vets for over 20 years and have assisted in anal gland removal many times. not 1 of the dogs lost control of their bowels. sometimes the Internet can be very misleading. you don't know for sure who wrote the article. was it written by a vet or some kook. before looking it up on the web call the vet and get from the horses mouth.

Its a risk you take. I know some dogs who have had anal glands removed as they filled frequently and caused problems. The 2 that I knew had no further problems. Most dogs will be fine but a percentage will have rectal incontinence.
