It is possible to un-do dreadlocks, but not right from the bottom. He could cut off most of the dreadlocks, then have someone un-knot the rest of it, but it's best to go to a professional.

This is what i did... i had dreadlocks for 5 years as well and took a decision and change my look, i did not touch my hair for 1 month and went to a friend to cut them off from where the body of dreadlock starts... no from scalp, pretty much 2 inches far form the scalp... Shaved my head was not an option for me, so it went really well, shampoo the hair and ready to go...

Let them grow out a 1/4 - 1/2 inch and get them cut out, then get the hair cut, but not shaved? does that work? How big are the locks?

I'm not sure if this is helpful, but maybe it doens't have to be down to the skin.

Tell him that lots of people have scars, not to worry about it. the hair grows like 1/2 inch in a month, it will be covered up in no time.

Yes, letting them grow out a little bit is a good idea. Also, a day or two before you plan to cut them, tell him to use lots of conditioner when he shampoos. That will help to loosen up the hair, and may end up giving you more to work with once you cut them off.

On that reality show "The Salon" with Paul, they always used to ease as much as they could out of the the dreadlock and cut off the remainder. They did try to save hair.

Cut each of the dreadlocks to an inch or twoof the scalp and wash and primp his hair. Then, go and give it a hair cut.

Let the locks grow out a little without getting them locked for a while then cut them. That way he'll still have enough hair to cover his head.

Better to go to a hairdressers about it as they will answer it better than I can. But shaving might be the only option but his hair will grow back quickly.

He could cut his locks quite short then unravel them, that way his scarred will still be hidden and it won't take so long to sort out the old locks
