Male or female, doesn't really matter, as everyone has said, if they are de-sexed, they pretty much have the same benefits. the only difference is that if you want a smaller kitty, get a girl, they do tend to be smaller than the males (but it's no guarentee, I've seen some HUGE ladies!)
Keep your cat indoors - it doesn't matter that you aren't in a busy city. Statistically, outdoor kitties live about 2 years - indoor kitties live about 15. That's a big difference! It may not be a car that gets him, he could get mauled by a dog, shot/kicked at by the neighbourhood kids, end up getting in a fight with another cat and picking up Feline HIV or worse.
Besides the health factor being a benefit, indoor kitties are SO MUCH more affectionate -they wait for you to get home, and follow you around the house "helping" while you do chores and come cuddle on your lap while you watching TV or reading!
If you do want your cat to have outside access, and you live in a house with a large yard, you can build a pen out of chicken-wire against the house, where kitty can access it from a bedroom window - this way, he gets to hang out outside and eat grass, bask in the sun and enjoy watching the birds, without you worrying.
I'm in a small place at the moment, so can't do that - so I've got my two kitties leashes, and we go for walks on the weekend! (well, they sniff about, and I wander after them!)

I think you should get two kittens and keep them inside forever. I would get a male and a female. They are usually different in their personalities and there are benefits to both sexes.
No kitten should be outside. If you get a kitten now it absolutely must stay in the house until next spring. The cold, the dark, etc. are factors to cause you losing the kitten for sure.
After you have kept a kitten in for those winter months you will be used to cleaning its box (probably the only negative in having a cat) and then why take the risks with someone you have come to love by letting it out.
It's a terrible anxiety to come home and not be able to find your cat. Many return safely and many do not. Cats who live indoors have longer healthier lives.

I believe cats and dogs should live indoors. The world is too much of a dangerous place. They could get hit by a car, killed by another animal, get diseases, so many bad things out there. My 2 cats stay inside all the time and they are both happy and healthy. I have a male and a female, and both are very loving and no trouble at all.

I have an inside female and I love it! I would say keep it inside. You will worry less about the cat, i.e. cat getting hit by a car, running away, bringing fleas in. A male or female would be nice. Just get it fixed so you don't have to worry about kittens.

Definitely an inside cat, as there are so many dangers outside. It can get hit by a car, poisoned, attacked by a stray dog or a raccoon etc. Male or female doesn't matter. If you get a male fixed before he ever starts spraying, then he probably won't spray. One of my cats is a three year old male, I got him neutered at around 5 or 6 months of age (before he started spraying) and he has never sprayed in his life. Boy or girl, it's really just a personal choice.

You probably should keep it indoors they can get all kinds of parasites from eathing birds or mice that they catch and eat. Also depending on the size of the cat, Ive seen crows pick up and fly off with a small rabbit and a squirrel. As to male of female I have both and love them both the same.

I think you should get a girl and you should keep her inside cause even if the cars arent an issue she or he can still get hurt or killed and beat up by other cats. they're really cuddly

either male or female...but make sure you plan to spay/neuter which ever one you decide to get ...also make sure you keep it inside because it will live much longer it wont get hit by a car, or eaten or get into a fight with another animal, and there are alot of people out there who hate animals and abuse them

keep inside if you possibly can. i have five cats and i prefer males. they just seem to be more affectionate. if you can, get two so they will have someone to play with and not get lonely.
