Before I answer your question, I wanted to share a really cool bit of trivia. The song, "Fly Like An Eagle," made famous by Steve Miller was actually written by blind songwriter, Paul Pena... who was greatly interested in the shamanic practices of the people of Tuva, a small country in Central Asia(think right on top of Mongolia). Paul actually mastered the difficult Tuvan practice of throat-singing and, with a small crew, finally went to Tuva in the 90's. I have a strong suspicion that you would really enjoy seeing the documentary of his trip, "Genghis Blues." There are shamanic elements throughout.
The eagle is a common symbol in many spiritual paths. The eagle is the seer; the one who can see far ahead and take in the bigger picture. The eagle is closer to heaven; he can be thought of as a messenger from the gods as one understands them.
Hey brother, the eagle, in fact, was one of the earliest totem guides I gathered to me. Stay true to your road; it'll get you where you're going. Namaste.

Uhm - no offense but I would advise against leaping off any roofs, trees or gorges to put that theory to the test. The fall wont kill you - but that sudden stop might smart a bit, not to mention somebody has to clean that mess up - and I don't do bodies.

some of the euro pagan beliefs tell us to seek knowlege or man and beast so that we may think like the philosopher but fly like the hawk... i think that this is said because hawks were more populous in europe.
are you Lakota?

many Pagan beliefs tie in with that... They are all similar to Native American beliefs when it comes to using animals as symbols (among other things).
