HI Kelly, If you are asking about birds such as kiwis and ostriches, penguins and that kind of bird that has wings but does not fly, that is one thing. Or are you asking why a regular bird that has wings and should be capable of flight and yet cannot fly then that is a different situation. If that is the case it could be due to illness or injury. Have you found an outdoor bird like this? If so your loving, caring nature wants to help, but sometimes even with our best intentions and desire to do good we really have to just let nature handle the situation, say a little prayer and go on. However, if this is a caged bird you have seen in a store or on display somewhere it could be due to their flight feathers being snipped. It is like having ones nails trimmed - not painful for the bird. This is done for the security of the pet and the owner. They can be on display for us to see up close and for them to be out of a regular caged environment without fear of them accidentally getting outdoor and into great danger. I don't know your age or the situation you are asking, but I hope this helps.-A Friend

Flightless birds evolved from birds that could fly. Many flightless birds evolved on islands that had few predators from which the birds needed to escape. Others use fast swimming or running as an alternative to flying. Some flightless birds (like the ostrich) have developed effective defenses, like big toe claws.

The biggest flightless birds alive today are the ostrich, the northern cassowary, the emu, the greater rhea, and the emperor penguin.

They are too heavy for their wings - in the case of my pet duck; these types of birds have been bred for meat (though I won't eat him!)so they have been developed to be very heavy. Other birds may have slowly evolved and adapted to different environments, eg penguins who have developed their wings into flippers to swim and eat fish - they don't need to fly anymore. Ostriches have developed long legs to run fast , so I guess they don't really need to fly. Other birds have developed to live more on the ground where the food is, maybe on islands where there are not many predators so they don't need to fly off (think of the dodo). that's all I can think of at the moment.

Depends on the bird. Some are too big with too small a wing span, some don't have the muscle power in there wings, some are covered in the special spices and will only ever fly when you throw them into the bin, the bones will fly anyway.

I think it has to do with evolution. In the environments these birds live in there's no reason for them to fly. For example, with penguins they are phenomenal swimmers so can usually get away from sharks etc. On land there's really just polar bears. So their wings have gotten almost non existent as there is no need for them. Similar concepts apply to emus and ostriches.

they have adapted to their environment in some cases. such adaption may have come about as they no longer needed flight to escape predators for instance, or like penguins they adapted to a different environment such as using their 'wings' for swimming under the ocean. Ostriches developed their legs for running and evolved in size to escape predators. This meant they became to heavy to fly so their wings became redundant for that purpose.
