I would like to audition for a role in "A White Christmas". I need some help, not only with the fact that I have no clue what it means to "belt", but also because I want help overall with the audition. You see, they say the character must be able to move very well, and I have been dancing since I was three. Is this an advantage? Do you think they'll ask me to dance at the audition? If so, what type of dancing do you think i'll be doing (the role is Susan Waverly)? Just list any tips and answers you have, thanks!!!!

To belt actually means to sing it with what is called the chest voice - when it is in a range or key that you can literally sing it with no strain from the chest and be loud- as opposed to the head voice which is the high range where it can get lighter sounding and harder to do.

And yes they may have you do a few dance steps but if you have been dancing since you were three then you'll be fine.

It means you have to be able to sing in a loud, clear voice that everyone will know. Of course if you've had dancing experience they will ask you to dance too!! Not sure of the style of dance though.. good luck!

I can answer the first question.

In singing there's a cliche' which goes something like "I really belted out that song."

It simply means that you sing with power and authority. There's no weakness or hesitancy in your voice - pure power and confidence. So when you say "Billie Holiday really belted out that song" it means she sang it with gusto, confidence and passion.

Don't worry to much - just get to the audition and give it your best!

To "belt out a song" means to sing it powerfully, with strength, as if the song is coming from deep within.

make sure you use your diaphram when you sing so your voice will project (reach the back of the room) - that's what belting it out means to sing loud enough for the sound to carry

"Belting" a song means that you have excellent vocal projection. You can easily be heard in the cheap seats
