They are referred to as jika-tabi which means literally "earth socks". They aren't "Ninja shoes"-except in someone's imagination, they're what Japanese construction workers etc. wear. The modern idea of a ninja costume is based on what Japanese stagehands and puppeteers wear, hence the mask and the jika-tabi. Real ninja wore whatever helped them blend in. Jika-tabi were actually developed by the Bridgestone corporation.
The thinking is that it's more important to have a good grip than steel toes, especially on high iron. Truckers like them for gear-jamming comfort, but they don't have a whole lot of support or much of an arch. I'm sure you can find somewhere to buy them on-line. You need to have the split-toe socks-tabi, as well. They aren't particularly expensive, construction workers usually have any number of pairs so they always have dry set.

calman has the right answer here, Tabi boots are a good kind of shoe that can help you, but as for trail running they're a little thin, but they give good traction for training, alot like the martial arts shoes that're sold on several of the martial arts merchandise websites.
I own a pair myself, but you can also get a similar grip and feel from Kung Fu shoes or Wu Shu sport shoes, but if it is Tabi boots that you want you can get them through Asian World of Martial Arts; they come in high cut and low cut type.
Century may also have them, but you may want to check it as well. good luck.
