This site tells you the laws for your state.

YOU CHOOSE your curriculum! Most of the time, you pay up front for whatever materials you choose to use. There is a LOT to choose from! As long as you follow state and local homeschooling laws, you have full freedom within those to pick what you use.

If you want a company to keep your grades and transcripts, there will be payment options that vary by company.

This is a question for the particular school (curriculum supplier) you are using. I have never seen any that require ALL the money up-front (unless it is a curriculum SELLER, like Rainbow Resource) Online/satellite schools usually have some type of monthly payment plan. However, they may require you to pay a registration fee and curriculum fee up-front, in addition to the regular tuition.

It depends on what system you have decided to use. There are so many options available to those who decide to home school. There are distance ed schools, home school networks, schools and uni's that incorporate home educated children and huge amounts of curriculum are available through book stores and on the internet. Start your search with the local bookstore to get some information, then look up (either on the net or in your phone book) your closest home educators network, they will be able to give you contacts in your area to speak with and will have meeting days and excursion days where you can meet and learn more. There is no one way to go and so much is available, that you should be able to work out a system that suits the learning style of each of your children and one that suits your budget. Good luck in your searching.

Pay money for what?

I suppose if you are buying a program or registering under a satellite school yes it will cost money.

Our home school does not cost very much. I spent $195 ONCE to buy a set of CD's with all of the information that we need to study for all ages.

You don't have to pay anybody unless you are using their material. You can go to a library for most of your books.

Math, writing and reading: These three. All you need to learn how to study.

In Australia you pay upfront. The fees are $30-$100 per year for a primary or high school student.

I didn't think it required some kind of subscription, I thought you just bought the materials for the coursework.
