All dogs are not a product of two full blooded dogs. Some have many breeds mixed in the gene pool ....hence the term Heinz 57. Sometimes you can look at a dog and see breed specific characteristics....such as black tongues....spitz typed coats.....long back (two dogs long and a half a dog tall), but a mixed breed of any other name is still a mutt. I even seen the results of a poodle X chihuahua produce offspring with a wiry coat that some terriers have. A mixed breed is just as lovable....just as loyal and just as good of a pet, but still a generic dog.

Hi I could recommend a book from the public library(actually two):The New Encyclopedia of the Dog, by Bruce Foggle DVM ( a vet) and The Complete Dog Book, by Dr. Peter Larkin. Both books are found in the nonfiction shelves in the adult section of the library (as apposed to the children's section). Call number 636.7; show any library helper and they could quickly find it for you. Then you can sit down with the dog in view and go through the various breeds of dogs and see what you think he could be. These books show several pictures of each kind of dog and describe them very clearly for you as to size, temperament, variations, etc. As others have stated I can't help much without a picture. Happy investigating!

Is the tail in a Q over his back? Or just that he holds his tail really hi? I would say that he could be a terrier/Black Lab mix. What does his coat look like? Is it rough? Smooth? Long? Short? Solid black? Or multi colored? Is his body thick? Deep in the chest? Thin? He may also be Scottish Terrier and Daschund? But that would be too short. What does his muzzle look like? Long? Short? Narrow? Broad? Descibe him in good detail.

if you really want an answer, ask a vet, or if you want an answer from yahoo, show a picture, and maybe someone will be able to find out for you.
When I got my dog, we thought he was a golden retriever and a husky because his tail curved up, but he was a golden retriever and a chow chow because he has a spotted tongue.
Good Luck with this!!

Can you post a photo? There are over 300 breeds of dog in the world - hard to determine from a simple description what the dog may be.
