I have very dark brown hair and not so long ago did I do highlights on my hair (because of my hair color, the highlights came out to be a bondish/orangy color - did it it a salon), but I want to get rid of them now. Would it be better to dye my hair to a dark color on my own or do it in a salon. Since the highlights came out being so orangy, Im afraid that when I dye my hair, it wont come out good. Recommendations....?

First - do not ever return to the salon that gave you the orange highlights! A good stylist/colorist would never let you leave with that, unless it's exactly what you asked for. Anyone with experience in the field would know that very dark brown hair (or black hair) doesn't take well to highlights without proper treatment.

I would suggest going to a reputable salon - a place where other people you know and trust have gone - to have your hair repaired.

I won't ever again use "do-it-yourself" color. :) My daughter and I had a time on my hair and I ended up spending over $100 to get it fixed. Had to promise hubby that I'd never attempt to color or highlight my own hair again. Good luck!

Because the highlights came out orangey you need something to fix the brassiness first, covering up highlights won't work because you already semi-bleached the hair by stripping some of the color out. I definitely would let a salon fix your problem, because color is tricky and after all it's your hair! If the salon did the first one do not go back there unless they can fix it for free. Sounds like they either used the wrong color or they didn't let it process enough.

You can dye it a darker color like a dark brown but the highlights will still peak through underneath. I covered up my highlights back in December of 2005 but I went to a salon. The highlights showed underneath and it looked nice(not to brag-smile).

If you are not sure of what color to go to(like I was), it is better to go to a salon and a hairdresser you trust. Hope this helps.

Well you can dye it darker but no matter what it will not completely cover the highlights it will be like a lighter brown in the area where the highlights were.I recommend not dyeing it again and just letting it grow out this is the only way you will get that natural color back.

so funny you wrote this. i had the same problem. i tried doing it myself but the highlights just fade into the dark color. I had to die my hair black like 3 times to get one even color. I would do it at a salon. 1 time and having someone do it for you is a lot easier than 3 times with your mistakes all over your head.

Ive always dyed my own hair, when I want to get rid of highlights, I just dye my hair darker. There is still a lightness in colour, so it looks great. But if u want it all one colour, I would suggest investing in going to a salon

Do it yourself, just pick a quality product. Cheaper is NOT always better! =) Adding color to your hair is pretty easy so I'm sure you wont have any problem! Make sure you get enough boxes to do your whole head. For example, my daughter has ALLOT of hair and needs a MINIMUM of 2 boxes. If you have thick hair and its long you are might need as many as 3 boxes. If, however, your hair is more like mine and "normal" in thickness and not too long, 1 or 2 boxes will do it.

Good luck and Goddess Bless!

I would do it myself so I could see the results before anyone else. Get two hair dyes of the same brand in case you need to do it again. Just a word of caution, don't get black.

Its always safer to have it professionally done! Most salons know what they are doing.
