New Hope PA on the Delaware River-75 miles WSW of Manhattan
Stockbridge Mass is a neat town but its 150 mi, if you go to Danbury CT and take US 7 N. to Stockbridge it's a really nice drive
Come back on the Taconic
And then there is Newport RI 3.5 hrs from NYC But everything you could ask for and a whole lot more. On of those great old American towns you will always return to.

New Paltz. Exit 18 off I-87 North.

Cool funky little shops, lots of restaurants. It's a cool college town. There's a GREAT winery not far from there.

There's another one call Sugar Loaf, it's an artists'colony. It can be hard to find unless you've got a good map. It's off Exit 16 of I-87, near Chester, NY. Mapquest it for directions.

New Paltz is a funky little town. It has a college nearby and many people from the Woodstock generation there. It is right off the Hudson River and has great views. It is about an hour or so North of New York City.

Coldspring, NY (on the Hudson river) is pretty charming, some decent hiking around there, close to the
Storm King sculpture center.

Sag Harbor on Long Island, old whaling town. Also East Hampton.

The city is all artsy and near water on both sides. Why do you want to leave and go else where - you're already in the best location for the arts. Stay there.

Of course, things like this are pretty subjective, but consider:
Manayunk, PA (very near Philadelphia)
New Hope, PA (near Philadelphia)
Saratoga, NY
Lambertvile, NJ (across from New Hope)

Some are light on the GREAT dining, but have enough to keep you entertained and are far enough from the city to have nature (Manayunk being the one exception- it's just on the edge of the city).

Rhinebeck, NY, is about ninety minutes from NYC. It's a very artistic community with great restaurants.
