I think because many, many years ago when men used to box, the other men standing around would form a ring around the boxers. Now it's squared, in a gym like setting but the term boxing ring is still used to this day. Something I learned some time ago.

The call ring is an atavism from at the same time as contests were fought in a extra or less drawn circle on the floor. The call ring continued with the Jack Broughton regulations in 1743, which specifed a small circle contained in the centre of the wrestle section the position the boxers met on the initiating of each and every round. the first sq. ring became presented by technique of the Pugilistic Society in 1838. That ring became centred as 24 ft sq. and certain by technique of two ropes. For those and different causes, the boxing ring is oftentimes humorously known because the "sq. circle."-)

Ring is another term for a boundary that surrounds something, or it used to be. A ring that surrounds your finger is round, because your finger is round. A boxing ring surrounds a boxing match. It could be any shape, I guess, but it happens to be square.

I think originally, before the elevated platforms were built, boxing matches simply took place in a ring that had been drawn or painted onto the ground. They kept the term ring for tradition.
