I can see what he's getting at, but he's probably doing it in a rather preachy way. Perhaps parents should criticise his choice of his daughters' middle names???

I use to like Jamie Oliver till all of this stuff about school dinners. If he was that bothered about the kids dinners in the firsts place then WHY did he not do anything about it in the first place years ago he been in the public eye and a very popular chef for few years now, and not wait till HE had kids that was the age to start school. It was like it was OK for other kids wile he been in the public eye to eat what was on offer, but soon as HIS kids was a age to start school so they did not have to eat this so call SH1TE he called school dinners they used to have just so they can still eat healthy like they do at home, and i feel that why he done it, My child eat healthy as well as junk food. she 11 very active and not over weight, I'm glad they getting proper food now and not this food that you just warm up in the oven in schools, but he ain't got the right what to say to parents or anyone how people eat. All this FAT lark and been unhealthy was never a issue years ago. it all to do with MONEY that things have to change to suite people that are not so thin.

as an ex-chef i have taken an interest in what some snack food producers put into there products and if you take a little time to look into this you wouldn't take long to realise that it is a little worrying . think about it you give you kids junk processed foods , stuff that a developing body doesn't need and cant process properly and can lead to health problems in later life .
healthy simple food can be bought cheaply , prepared easily and with a little imagination even the fussy kids would eat it.
Oliver is providing the information for us to give our kids a better standards of life .
if you choose to give you kids junk food then that's fine ,do it , but when they get older and hopefully wiser than you they wont thank you for it.

I totally agree with him, it's all too easy to give in to their demands i.e fast food, processed meals, crisps, sweets, etc . I do have sympathy to us parents when both mum and dad are working and trying to run a family. It's difficult to find time to prepare and cook good wholesome food in this fast day and age we now live in. Having said that in my opinion if you are bringing children up you are responsible in making sure that they receive a healthy and balanced diet and must find the time .we as parents are responsible for our children's welfare. One thing that does bother me is all the chemicals that are in these types of food and what they are doing to our kids and what effect will they have in the future.

Surely if you feed you children healthily already you would know the comment was not aimed at you, but there are many parents who give no thought to healthy food at all, one of my children's Friends takes jam sandwiches(white bread to boot)

You certainly are taking this personally. The main thing is to give your kids food that is nutritious and not full of artificial junk. Yeah, you pay for the food, but that's not really the most important consideration, is it? Your intent should be what's BEST for your kids. Right on, Oliver.

You want obese kids who will develop heart disease and diabetes then go right ahead and give them any old junk you feel like. Personally I think he has a good point, parents need to give their kids healthy, low fat foods to prevent the shocking rise in childhood obesity.
If you love your kids and want them to live long, healthy lives then you will listen up and take note of what people like Jamie are saying cos they know what they're talking about!

I hate to criticise but you sound like just the sort of parent who needs to listen to WHY he's suggesting you change your kids packed lunches. Sorry, I know that sounds harsh but cheap can mean healthier stuff too. You don't have to make an excuse of the fact that you pay for your kids food and not him.

Go on then, give your kids sweets, crisps and Red Bull for lunch and watch them slowly die in front of your eyes.
In 5 years they'll be fat, unable to concentrate, their grades will be worse, they'll be bullied at school, bad teeth, bad skin, etc, etc.
In 10 yrs, they be on the way to more serious health problems, maybe heart problems, growth problems and probably never change so they'll eat themselves to an early grave.
Thank god your such a caring mother and just couldn't be bothered to give your children a long and healthy life.

He's right most people go for the easy option because the kids want the Dairy Lea dippers and cheese strings, crisps and cakes and coca cola etc when it should be fruit and other healthy options, and he's not telling you what you must feed them he is volunteering his experience and advising.
If you have got so worked up about it, he obviously struck a cord.
