I want to add some highlights but want something not expensive or complicated that I can do at home or pick up from walmart for women of color that does not damage my hair. My hair is black and I am african american. Maybe like light auburn or plum color.

Honey: Are you asking for trouble or what??? Hair colour, specially highlights, is no cheap or easy matter. If you want to have the look that's right for you, I highly recommend that you save your pennies and visit a reputable salon. It will cost you approximately $140 to get a full set of highlights and about $90 for a partial set. Hair health and beauty is not a quick fix. I know that you may not like what I have just written to you, but I could tell you a lie and cause you more grief than not. On the other hand, you could go the cheap route at a cheap salon with an ignorant stylist and look, That's Right!, cheap.
Mr. M on hair colour.
