Rabbit, Cabriolet, Fox, Vanagon and Transporter are just a few that can't possibly be winds.

I answered this question in Yahoo! Answerers 4 months ago.
VW traditionally has named their water-cooled cars after animals (Rabbit, Lupo, Audi/VW Fox)
types of winds (Scirocco, Bora, Corrado, Passat and the Eos, the goddess of wind)
and sports (Golf, Polo, and Caddy- the Golf "carrier" was a Rabbit/Golf pickup truck.)
There are some model names that do not fit into the mold, like the Dasher, Jetta, Sharan, Toureg(Named after nomadic tribe) and the Phaeton (The son of the sun-god Helios).
Ones that don't count
The GTI's full name is the Golf GTI,
The Cabrio is the shortened name for Golf Cabriolet. Cabriolet means "folding top" in French.

Of course not all vw are named after winds, since many of the early cars were known officaly by a type number and realy only got there other names as basicly nicknames. That said with the swap over to water-cooled vw did start a tradtion of naming cars after winds.
Examples:
Passat is a tradewind
Scirocco is a hot wind sweeping off the africian desert
The tradtion basicly changed with the next name. The Golf was actucal named after the gulf stream and vw did not original intent to name it after the game, but needless to say most people connnected it to game and not the wind. Basicly vw gave in and went with the game connection and named there next car after another sport. The Polo. As well to keep with the name Golf/game theme the names Driver(a limited edtion polo) and the Caddy, where all so used.
Keep in mind where pretty much talking about the european market here, as vw went with the name rabbit in the states and it's name has nothing to do with wind or games. In the states the tradtion is more about animals\creatures, as in example the bug, fox, rabbit, etc.
