It is now known that any exposure to the sun increases your chances for skin cancer. The longer the exposure, the higher the risk especially for fair-skinned people or those with a medical or family history of skin cancer. Dark skinned people like Africans have a built-in protection by nature of their genetic disposition for having a large amount of melanin in their skin. However, it has to be there before the sun exposure. Melanin will increase with sun exposure in fair skinned people...this is tanning...but does not prevent the risk of cancer. Now, a recent study about sunblocks with SPF show that the risk of cancer may actually be increased if the sunscreen is not applied properly. The safest course is to stay out of the sun or wear protective clothing. the next best is to properly apply sunblock with a high SPF that protects against UVA and UVB. The next best is to limit your sun exposure to early morning or late afternoon. The worst thing is deliberately trying to increase your tan by repeatedly lying out in the sun with no protection or in tanning beds.

You don't have to have sunscreen. People tanned for years before they invented the stuff. I never use it, tanned head to toe except for that little line about halfway down

Well, it could depend. My fair-skinned, red-headed, green-eyed grandfather probably had a nice tan when he was younger, but has had to have large chunks of his nose and ears removed in the past couple years due to skin cancer...

I think I'll stick with the SPF 45....
