Crossing a cheque means that a third person cannot write their name across it as a replacement for the original name on the cheque.
i.e. if it is to Mr A.N.Other, but is not crossed, then anyone can put it into their own account regardless.

Cheques should already be crossed now-a-days. That is what the two lines are on the cheque.
If in any doubt talk to your bank and they will explain and maybe put a note on your account to check with you if they receive any cheques with the original name crossed out before they honour them.

for many years all cheques issued by UK banks have "Account Payee Only" printed on them.

this means that the cheque can only be paid into an account held by the designated payee.

before this procedure was adopted, and uncrossed cheque could be exchange for cash at the drawing bank.

the benefits of this will be obvious.
