My son is good at spelling a word out, but can't get it right when he writes them down. Could he be dyslexic or is it something else? We have asked at school since he was 8 ( he is now 12 and at his last school) but they keep saying that he does have a problem but its not to bad! Please help.

Contact as many people as you need to, to get your son tested. You know the funny thing is, I just talked to my daughters school last week about getting her tested, and since then I have run in to 3 other people who have the same suspicions. If you believe your son has a problem, raise your voice till he gets tested. It is negligence if they don't. Google "signs of dyslexia" I found a good website.

By the way dyslexia is inherited.

When a child has dyslexia the words that they are reading tend to 'jump' about on the page, obviously making it difficult to read them. Your son's school should be able to provide a 'reading strip' which comes in an assortment of colours, your son should place the strip over the piece that he is reading and the 'strip' helps to keep the words 'still' on the page. They come in purple, green, red, blue and yellow. your son will find that only one colour will help him.
When writing out words, you and your son's school should encourage him to slowly de-code (sound out) the words so that he can hear the majority of the letters, this way enabling him to spell them correctly. A lot of dyslexic children tend to mix up the letters 'b' and 'd' too.
You should push the school to test your son for dyslexia and if he has it then they should provide the help and support he needs.
Some severly dyslexic children can sometimes be given a 'scribe' for important exams such as S.A.T.s and G.C.S.Es.
Good luck!!

I would seek a professional on that one because it may be dyslexia
and it seems like the school isn't trying too hard to find out
