They didn't. When it flooded the leprechauns fell out of the sky. They gathered their gold in response to the first rainbow, and do so to this day to commemorate that event.

Well, BEFORE the flood, they kept the gold in locked iron chests. That didn't work out too well with the flood and all. Now they keep their gold in pots, because pots float better. You know, just incase.

Everyone knows that the Tuath de Dannan didn't enter Ireland until well after the flood. The leprechauns didn't evolve until then!

They didn't have any gold then because the Formarians, who existed before the Great Flood, had everything... before they were banished to the sea.

Somewhere near Boise, Idaho, so I hear. The Mormons explain it in their first, and less popular title, "The Book Of Leprechaun".

pots werent inveted yet, so they would eat thier gold.
but after the flood they invented a pot, but it was too heavy to carry.
so they put it at the end of the rainbow.

Thankfully, leprechauns were swimmers back then. They strapped it to the backs of sea turtles.
