Most people get a tongue piercing and then their tongue swells up for about 5-7 days. It's hard to talk or eat and if you gag easily that could be a big problem. Probably the main long-term problem though is damage to your teeth as the ball bangs into your teeth constantly, causing possible fractures, wear and chipped teeth. If you decide to do it make sure that you research all facets of the procedure and go to someone who is reputable and be very careful with your teeth. While I may not agree with the choice to get your tongue pierced it is a very personal decision and I applaud you for doing your research on the risks/benefits before doing so. Good luck and know that if you decide you don't like it you can always take it out and the hole will grow over. But be sure that's what you want to do before getting any piercings. Take care.

Tongue piercings may look cool now, but you are at risk for fractured teeth. You could accidentally bite on the piercing while you sleep, eat or talk, and then having to deal with visits to the dentist to have them repaired (root canals, crowns, even loss of the tooth), and that is more money to shell out.
Infection is another concern. This results in much greater swelling that can lead to discomfort, poor speech and a reduced or lost sense of taste.
If you do still choose to get it done after knowing the risks, make sure the place you are going to uses clean and sterilized instruments and needles, and that the metal barbells they put in your tongue are surgical grade stainless steel to reduce the risk of allergic reactions to lesser grade metals.
Once you have the piercing placed, keep it clean! brush the jewelry twice a day and rinse with an antiseptic mouthwash. It wil take about a month to heal.
Be careful and good luck!

Hi my fiancee has it done and i just asked him, he said it is very sore for about a week till the swelling goes down, make sure you stock up on listerine, and is pain full until it heals.it hurts when you cut or bite your tongue so its 10 times worse. Also when you first get it done they give put in a large bar allowing your tongue to swell, he said this was a pain as it gets in the way, plus he hated having to eat soup or custad till it heald, When they take this bar out and put a normal one in you will find you may get your fork stuck on it or you may bite on it. and wait till you get used to it and it heals fully before you try and eat spagetti or noodles as it wraps round it and gets stuck. Other that that you will be fine. Also make sure he checks for a vein underneath you tongue as if he pieces through it you can lose alot of blood.

it feels like your tounge has been numbed....because your tongue gets numbed. You dribble every where and look like a total spakker. How long does it take to heal? That depends on your oral habbits now doesn't it. What are the risks...............haha, it is a muscle, if they pierce the wrong place it could go through a nerve and your tounge would be paralyzed, and you wouldn't be able to kissy kissy or show off your new piercing. Tragic.
But actually I might be lieing.

Your tongue is the only piercing you can have that will heal as soon as you take it out. and it will heal completely. Its becuase its a muscle. I had mine done, but i took it out after about 2 years. began to hurt. be prepared to have no orientation in your mouth or no food for about a week!

I used to work for a dentist who was the president of the Dental Board and he told me it is dangerous to get a tongue piercing as there is a vein running through your tongue and if they pierce it you can die. He has written many articles regarding this subject. I think you should research it more before going ahead with it.

I highly recommend you don't get one. I am a dental assistant and all too often we in the dental office have to fix broken or cracked teeth. however if the tooth gets broken or fractured below the gums there is no saving the tooth, it's going to have to come out. Lip rings are also a problem for they rub againt the gums and causes them to receed. if you want piercings, stick with your ears.

one of the risks is chipping the enamel on your teeth with the bar and then your teeth are more susceptible to decay as the dentine layer under enamel decays more easily. also make sure piercing studio is ++ clean infected tongue gets very big and painful
