Most of the time the engine light will come on because there is a emissions malfunction somewhere. It could be an O2 sensor or somthing as stupid as a cylinder missfire. The only way to be sure is to have it checked. Auto parts stores like Advance Auto Parts and Auto Zone will check your cars computer and let you know why the light is on for free. And by the way 146000 miles is nothing for a Toyota, My truck has 316000 miles on it and still running like a champ. Hope I have been helpful.

All of these are good answers, but it could go a little deeper than that. Your engine is controlled by series of computer and sensors. If the air to gas ratio is not right, or the sensor is on the fritz, it will signal that light to turn on. There are many things that go into that little light coming on, several times nothing is really wrong with the vehicle when it comes on. At times that lights signalling is the hardest thing to nail down.

Theresa, that light means one of two things, your transmission fluid is low or your oil level is low. My mons car check engine light comes on whenever the oil is hot. And that is on an american car. Generally on foregin cars, it is the transmission fluid that is low when that light comes on. So you should check those two fluids if you want.

you could have hit a bump when you were driving that would have caused it come on, something like a wire might have came out of place but other than that i doubt anything is wrong with it.
