It is not just the dog that you need to keep flea free it is the whole house if the dog has run of the whole house. The best thing that I have found that works on fleas for the dog is revolution, but you need to make sure the dog is heart worm free before using this.
Take and put a flea collar in the collection bin of your vacuum and vacuum the whole house, then get the dirt out of the house. Then shampoo all of the carpet, wash all of the bedding, and then flea bomb the whole house. While you are blocked out of the house you could treat the dogs area outside as well. After you go back into the house vacuum the house again with another flea collar in the collection bin, then get it out of the house when you are done. Good luck.

Of course, the best method of flea control is a topical like Advantage, Frontline or Revolution. The first two are available without a prescription from your veterinarian or online. The third is a prescription product that also protects against heartworms. Over-the-counter off-brand products available from petstores (topicals, shampoos) are only effective for a day or two (despite what the label may say), and can be harmful to some pets. The only effective "home" remedy, to be perfectly honest, is to buy a flea comb from the pet store and comb the bugs out yourself. Other "home remedies" like garlic, herbs, etc, just plain old don't work, and may also be harmful to your pet.

Flea comb and lots of time.
Most home remedys do not work.
If your dog has fleas now and lives in the house you are going to have to
1. treat the dog
2. treat the house and carpets
3. wash all the beeding he has been on
and continue to trat until you have erridacted the problem it may take a few months.
After that I strongly recommed using one of the monthly spot on treatments for fleas. They work very well.

Bath it and leave the soap on it for 5 minuets. That will only stop the problem for the time you really need to get some revolution it is inexpensive about 10 dollars for a month it gaurds against mosquitoes and most types of intestinal worms, ear mites and fleas and ticks

A dab of lavendar oil on the back of their neck is supposed to work. If nothing else, they'll smell good. Seriously though, I've never used that, I read it somewhere, but my dog hasn't gotten fleas.

You can also drop some on their bedding to keep fleas outta there too.

Most home remedies don't work. Garlic is bad for your dog because it can make them anemic. Sentinel is the best thing you can use. It deworms your dog and kills and keeps fleas off for a month.
