In about an hour, I am trying out for my high school's performance of Suesical the Musical. They WANT us to sing a song that's in Suessical, (they even did a workshop on Tues. so we could learn them) but that is a bad idea because then they only see you as the character you tried out for, and if it wasn't what they are looking for, they only see you as 'not that character' instead of 'how about that character?'. What type of song should I sing? Jazzy, brassy, something pretty, what? I don't know any of the songs or characters.

The person auditioning us is being really unproffesional and bragging about this freshman who has done proffesional stuff, sings at weddings, &c and she personally knows her. Isn't that proffesional? I don't stand a good chance. Any suggestions on how to calm my nerves?

And now, I've been so worried, that I grabbed a comfort food: Mac&cheese. Now should I drink lemonade or honey, or what would be good for my voice?

I got eh part of Mayer's Wife. I don't know if that is a good part or not, but the other person that got cast is one of the best actresses at our school. Everyone will be saying to see her night. :/ :(

Just take it easy. It would probably be a good idea to sing a song from Suessical the Musical. Most of the songs are silly and will show that you don't mind looking silly on stage. When you sing, be sure to be energetic and move around. In the musical, there is a lot of dancing and movement. Just let them know that you're comfortable on stage and I'm sure you'll get the part. My boyfriend acts at college and when they do musicals, the actors usually drink that honey tea that you drink when you have a sore throat. It's specifically for sore throats and coughs, but it will loosen up your throat so you can sing. Good luck!

Honestly, it is generally discouraged that you audition with a piece from the show. However, if they had a workshop for you to learn them...they're sending mixed messages. It seems that's what they want for this particular production.

In general, audition with a piece that is similar to the music in the show, but not IN the show. That way, those casting the play will not think you find yourself perfect for a certain part. (For instance, with Seussical, you could sing a song from You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown.)

Directors--especially high school ones--tend to be unprofessional. It sucks. It will happen forever, though. If the director has a friend auditioning, they will generally get favor. It's not fair, and I hate it, but it's true. I'm planning on being a director, and I just hope I don't get sucked into that trap. It is completely inappropriate at the high school level that he/she is being so open about it! If it's making people uncomfortable in general, you may want to complain--anonymously--to the principal.

The best way to have calm nerves before an audition is to know you KNOW your part. Practice it for at least a few days beforehand. Have yourself a cup of tea--hot tea is best for your voice, by the way. DO NOT drink milk for a few days before an audition, and avoid dairy.

Well , people know people, its actually kind of normal. Jazzy is your best choice. And by the way Suessical is actually speeled Seussical, trust me, I've been in it 3 times.
