She has been potty trained since she was a kitten. She has never done this until a couple of months ago. We got a new cat a year ago, but this is really recent. She poops in the hallway about twice or three times a week. Sometimes she poops in the living room. What gives? She has plenty of water and I haven't changed her food brand (purina one). Please help, I want to keep her but I can't keep dealing with this.

Make sure the litter box is clean. You may even need to try a new brand of litter.

It's also possible she's rejecting the box because of the other cat -- even though you've had the other cat for a while. You might need to get a second box to put next to the first one.

In most cases, defecating outside the litter box is a behavioural issue. Of course, it wouldn't hurt to have her checked over by a veterinarian, along with the routine blood/urine/xrays testing. By "behavioural", we usually mean anxiety. Cats don't have the capacity for spite or revenge, but they are easily made anxious. Any change in the home can cause anxiety; moving the litter box, changing litter brand, getting a new boy/girlfriend, moving the furniture, etc. Of course, there are also kitties that randomly poop where they're not supposed to for no good reason - I've got one of those myself! The most important cause of kitty anxiety, though, is other cats. Even if they seem to get along well on the surface, cats can easily upset each other.

So basically, if you don't think there's ANYTHING that could POSSIBLY be causing your cat anxiety, then she may just be unhappy with the living arrangement and there's nothing you can do. She may be happier in another home, where she's the only cat. :(

Something has changed in the house and the cat isn't happy about it. It might be that you changed the brand of cat litter. Or you got a new litter box or even moved the litter box. All of those things will make a cat stop using the litter box. You don't say that it is diarrhea, so I am assuming that it is just normal stool. It is a behavior problem and until you figure it out, she will continue to do it.

They have very strong senses and when another cat's smell is on something they want to mark it. That's what it sounds like she's doing. After the smells there almost nothing will get it out .
Even after it's been washed in the washer the cats can still smell it. Get this stuff called Zero Odor. I have 17 cats and it works on them. You can spray everything with it even the litter boxes. There will be virtually no smell. You have to order it off of the internet. here is the website... it areally works.

Cats are fastidious animals and will not eliminate in the litterbox if it isn't clean enough for them, or if they don't like another cat using the same box.

Cats also don't like change. You said this behavior started "a couple of months ago". What else was going on at that time that may have affected the cat or its environment?

Some cats will not share a litter box. Keep the litter clean, VERY clean. And, cats can be tempermental. There could be something you are not noticing.

She is pissed off about something. My cat used to crap in my closet when she was mad at me. As soon as you figure out what she is mad about and change it She will stop.
