My friend told me her mom says it's good to eat fruit by itself. What's the origin of this advice?

I have read that the digestive process our stomachs use for fruit are best kept un-diluted by other digestive chemicals. The stomach uses hydrocloric acid to digest certain types of foods, and pepsin to digest other types of food. One is acid-based, the other is alkaline. If you mix foods which use either of these compounds, they can nuetralize each other, and the food sits in your stomach undigested, and then begins to putrify. This can be hard on the body, and you have to use much more energy to pass the food through your system. Ever wonder why you're sleepy after eating that Thanksgiving dinner of turkey and mashed potatoes? It's because the meat not only has triptofane (hope I spelled that right) but because you combine it with the starchy potatoes or stuffing. Protiens and starches each require the different gastric juices, and when mixed, they cancel each other out. How you combine your foods is just as important as a proper balance of foods.
Or, at least, that's what I've read.

There is a book on the subject written by some nutritional expert. I can't remember the name of it but it says that certain foods mixed together will bond and form an undigestable paste that will stick to your insides. He says fruit mixed with anything will do this, meat and starch don't mix but vegetables mix with either. I think maybe it was that fitness guru guy that swam from alcatraz in handcuffs for his 65th birthday.

When you eat fruit, you should eat it alone with nothing else. It is supposed to help with your digestion. That is what I heard.
