I'm looking for a dedicated outdoors vehicle for bikes, surf, camping, occasional off roading and some general driving. I hate buying cars in the first model year, and I don't like the horrible MPG of the FJ. However, I am not sold on the Element's quirky styling and the econo-box rep of Honda (cheap materials, feel). Even worse, none come with GPS.satellite nav.

I omitted the Xterra because it has the worst fuel economy of the lot, and it looks rather unoriginal.

Everytime I'm in a low end Honda (civic, crv) it feels and sounds hollow and plastic-y (if that's a word).

They are fundimentally different vehicles. the FJ is a truck with extra seats where the Honda is a car with big tires. The FJ cruiser is much more vehicle for the $. It shares most of it's drivetrain with the $55k gx470 lexus. It's got a great torqie v6 and will be MUCH MUCH better offroad than the Honda. In fact the fjcruiser would likely be better in 2wd than the Element in 4wd. (especially with a rear locker engaged which would have to be modified to bypass the computer to work in 2wd.)

The Element is based primarily off the civic and will not withstand much offroading. It's certainly a good reliable vehicle and would be the better choice for mostly highway miles.
It really is a comparison between a truck and a car. If your looking for a car with big tires that gets better mileage than the element check out a new rav4.
Depends on which you need.

Are you serious? I'd say Toyota and Honda are both quality autos. The Civic and Corolla are "econoboxes" but they're certainly a higher quality than Cavaliers and Neons. I'd go with the Honda; the quirky styling is what makes the Element interesting and the car has gotten good ratings on Edmunds.

Depends on your price range and size of the vehicle you want. The FJ had a very cheap feel to its interior, in my opinion, but the Element is quite quirky and has vinyl floors instead of carpeting.

As far as an econo box rep of a Honda, the Element may be baseline but their vehicles definitely do not have the cheap materials and feel that they may have once had.

I agree with Jetboy, the FJ is alot better than the Honda. I get to drive them quite often and they drive very nice. they offer lots of room inside, nice power, a six speed transmission is available, and the four wheel drive is great, even in two wheel drive you can lock the rear differential and take it places you may only take other four wheel drives. on the other hand. the new rav-4 four is also another good option, specially the 6 cyl version, lots of power, and again lots of comfort. Honda is a great make, but toyota is better when comparing these vehicles.

The Element is more practical. The 07 model has better materials.
