Here are some things he will need:
1. Pictures of you
2. His favorite books and DVDs (they may have a portable dvd player where he is going.)
3. Some of his favorite snack foods
4. Deodorant, soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, and hairbrush.
5. Bug repellent
6. Batteries, a flashlight and radio w/ CD player (if he doesn't have one).
7. A Bible.
8. Letters from you. These are very important. They are isolated and some get depressed.
9. Hearing from you will keep happy. You can also send him a recording of your voice. Just talk to him like you normally do. Be encouraging.
10. Stationary and prestamped envelopes. Also, give him some pens.
11. A warm blanket. It gets cold at night.
12. The funny pages. The Far Side book, or Dilbert.
13. A calling card with plenty of minutes on it. It will get very expensive if he calls without a calling card. There are organizations that may be able to supply a phone for him.
I hope this helps. You can also give him a disposable camera or a digital one.

I work at a packaging store that packs care packages daily. Some favorites I've seen are
Easy Mac or Soup (Chef Boy R Dee) in the single serve bowls
Magazines
Home Baked cookies esp. Fudge
Letters
Breath mints
Hygenie Products
Crackers
Candy

I would suggest not to put nude pictures of yourself in them or porno - by the time they get it It could and sometimes is open by other people. I have had customers that went to Iraq come in and tell me that. They also have said not to put anything very valuable in them.

Ok, I'm gonna pretend I'm in Iraq and tell you what I would love my g/f to send to me, it's probably the same stuff any guy would want.

Make him an album with pictures of you, his family and friends. You would be like the best g/f ever if you sent him something like a PSP so he can play games and watch movies on his spare time (send him the movies too obviously, his favorites so he knows you care). Also send snacks, candies, junk food and stuff that you think is gonna make it in good condition. You could also put some books or magazines. You could ask his friends and family to write letters for him and send them in the box too. Send him clothes too, especially underwear.

Ok, another idea (instead of the photo album and letters), could be making a collage or poster with a lot of pictures of people he cares about and have his friends and family sign it on the back and write a little message to him.

Hope that helps!

Edit: Ok, I thought about something good, this might sound a little... um, unusual maybe, but I'm sure he'll love it. Since he doesn't have his g/f there (and hopefully is not getting the action from someone else hehe) it would be cool if you sent him a male masturbator, you could get those at sex shops and can cost from ten to a hundred bucks, depending on how good they feel. After only using the hand for a long time, it gets kind of boring. Sorry if this was too much lol, but trust me, he'll like it. Oh and send him some cigarettes, if this works like jail, cigarettes are the new money, he can exchange them for other stuff with their mates, it doesn't matter if he doesn't smoke.

Things that won't take up much space or that he'd use up quickly. Make sure you send him some of his favorite junk foods. Also, consider knitting him some black wool socks...or find someone who can knit socks. Wool socks are apparently the best type of socks for these guys because they wick away moisture, regulate heat and they're soft and thick. Cotton socks don't wick away the sweat and it can cause blisters and chafing... not the thing a brave soldier needs. Besides, knitting is a great stress reducer for you! I'm knitting socks for soldiers right now and with every stitch I'm wishing them safety and well being. Also, maybe a few little toys he can give to the local children. Perhaps you can also get some money exchanged to Iraqi money and send that off to him as well.

You should send him some cup cakes, well packaged or cookies. They love those. Also send him good magazines, no adult material since it's not allowed in Iraq. They will confiscate and he can get in lots of trouble. Send something to read, a medium size book. A journal, a special pen, a picture he can hang over his cot. Send him inspirational material as well. A DVD of his favorite movie. The local newspaper without cupons. ;-)

Wet wipes. Indoor plumbing is not always available or reliable when found. They are great for taking off layers of sanding grit too. Puzzle books and pencils, paperback books, anything that helps divert boredom and doesn't rely on power to enjoy is a good thing to include. Anything take helps make the water taste better(powder drink mixes, instant cocoa,it can get pretty cool at night, etc.) Phone cards are always a good send as well.

Send him some LOVE lol, write about 30 letters of things you would like to say to him to encourage him, and then tell him to open only one every day. It will be very encouraging to him, and he will feel closer than ever to you... also send some non-perishable food items, I'm sure it gets old eating the same stuff over and over again. And pictures are nice to send as well...

An Inspirational book would be good too, go to www.lifeway.com and click on family, there are lots of great books on there.

You should also get him a comedy book, something that would really make him laugh. Laughter is the best medicine.

We just did this with our Cub Scout pack. We sent over packages for Christmas to soliders from our home town. Some suggestions:
razors/shaving cream
toothpaste/new toothbrush
wet wipes (they love these)
magazines
local newspapers (they can read up on local current events)
t-shirts
hard candy
Kool-aid/powdered drinks
card/card games
hand held games
books
coffee
soups/stews/canned foods

I wouldn't send anything that could leak or melt inside the boxes. It will make a big mess.
