Ever seen that movie Falling Down, with Micheal Douglas? LOL. I'm just joking around people.

I was a professor at USC, which is located in that area. During the daytime, much of the area is fairly safe. It is, however, unsafe at night (if you're silly and go wandering alone down a dark alley). People talk a lot about the gang problem in South Central -- but, interestingly, I think only 2% of all gang activity involves violent crime. Recently, the area just around SC has started to become much nicer. Hopefully, that trend will continue.
LA has tried to change the perception of South Central LA by renaming it South LA. I never understood that!

In the forties and fifties South Central was a great neighborly area. Now, some areas look like Beirut. Dangerous for whites at night, lots of black on black crime. I grieve for the kids growing up there. Los Angeles has been destroyed.

There are good and bad areas, just like just about anywhere. Durring the day, it is not too bad. At night, it can get fairly dangerous, if you stray from the main streets, and sometimes, even the main streets are not very safe. There is a high crime rate also, but its a mnority of the people doing a majority of the crime.

Lived in LA for four years now, still haven't been there. (Still haven't been most places in the area.) Only "know" what I see on TV and movies. And it is supposed to be rough, unsafe, African-American, and poor. Probably a kernel of truth, but I would guess exaggerated.

Are you thinking of moving there? I wouldn't. Mostly the people who live there do it because they don't think they have any other choice.
