It depends. Was it a real police officer or "campus security" - just the college's law enforcement, and not the actual police force of your town/city? That's a difference right there. The college I went to, my friends generally disregarded their tickets because the farthest they could get into trouble is with the school itself - the security team at the school would often write 50 or 100 dollar fines for incorrect parking in order to keep an order to things at the school. They weren't real police though - no ranking, no police entrance exam - they were just hired-on security.

One of my friends never registered his vehicle with the school and simply parked wherever he wanted and however he wanted, sometimes even in the dean's parking space, for two years at a time and never had any problems because they couldn't really trace his car - it wasn't on file in the school, and the security had no access to "real" police databases, and it wasn't a REAL legal offense - I mean, seriously, would a real policeman write you a ticket for parking where it says "this spot is reserved for the dean"? I bet they don't even have a monetary punishment set out for that. Heh, what would that be, 5 dollars?

If it's a real cop I'd pay it because back tickets can all be found if you are EVER stopped by a cop or receive another ticket, and open tickets always stay on your record. Depending on the perserverance of the cop and where you live you might even get severe fines, a court order or even a revocation of your license. I had a guy that had accumulated over ten traffic tickets, mostly for speeding, and he eventually had to go to court and he had to pay the entire collective fee plus fines and late fees and court fees, and he was on probation - it was a serious blow to the wallet.

I live in the UK, my son had a parking ticket that he didn't pay and he got letters for the bill which he left unopened eventually the bailiffs turned up at his flat and he now has a enormous debt as he also had to pay interest on the ticket also bailiffs costs etc So I say pay it straight away !!

most likely just a lot of agony and pain. And unless you're into that sort of thing it would be wise to just pay it. The other answers say basically the same thing. The only way you might be able to get out of it is if were a "wrongful ticket" which you could contest, but most likely you won't be able to get out of it - so that brings us back to the first 2 sentences. Overall, though it is up to you.

Was the officer only working for campus, or is he a city or county cop? If only on campus, it won't go against your license, but the other...yes, but it will take time for it to show up. Go ahead and pay the fine.

You will end up paying the ticket plus additional fine. Take care of it now or it will be forced upon you later.

i'm not certain of campus police and their reach as far as your driving record or license, but aside from all of that, why would you NOT pay a ticket?

You won't graduate until you square away all your debts. That includes parking tickets.
