I want to hear from people who have lost a lot of weight, how they did it. About 4 years ago I lost an unbelievable amount of weight by eating very low fat, but fairly high carb diet. Well, within 2 years I had gained pretty much all of it back by reverting to my old ways of eating. I have a lot of weight to lose and I wonder what worked for others. I have tried Weight Watchers, I have tried low carb (which I hated not being a big meat eater). Also, how can I motivate myself to stick with it? Everytime I try to diet, I fail. Please only give advice if you have lost a good amount of weight. If you haven't before, you probably have no idea what I am struggling with. :) Thanks

You need a plan! If you decide to go somewhere far away you don't just jump in the car and drive. You need to pack, plan, get a map.
There are lots of on line diets that can help and they work. You need to find one that you like and you will stick to. I personally believe that low fat is the way to go for most. You just need to retrain your taste buds and it can take a few weeks.
Good luck you can do it.

I have lost weight, though not an incredible amount as you have, so I have some idea what you mean. For the record, I'm about 40 pounds into my weight loss journey, and have another 40 to go.

Most importantly, you aren't looking for a diet - you need a change of lifestyle. You need to come up with a healthy eating plan that you can stick with FOR LIFE. You will lose weight at first, and reach a point where you stop, and will maintain that weight (+/- a few pounds of course). "Diets" are temporary fixes to a long-term problem.

That said, you need to decide what works best for you. I found that Weight Watchers worked for me, as does just keeping a journal of my eating habits - it makes me pay attention to what I'm eating. I still eat "bad" things once in a while, but I no longer do it daily. I try to eat balanced meals - something from each of the food groups, if possible. I steer toward low-fat when possible. All these things are choices I think I can live with, and my family can live with, and the bonus is that they help me lose weight.

To stay motivated, find some friends, either in person or on-line, who are willing to embark on this heathly lifestyle with you. Trade recipes. Develop workout plans. Commiserate failures. Celebrate successes. Community support, whether family, peers, or co-workers, is vital in making a plan work.

Good luck!

I have been there done that and am doing it again. I find it difficult to motivate myself to get into a diet. Right now, I am noticing that the best thing for me is exercise. I am needing to focus on that right now. My intention is to then focus hard on my eathing habits and talk to my doc. I noticed that since I exercise, I have a more energy and better mental health so that I can resist emotional eating and help my already low self esteem. For me I do better with a buddy so that when my motivation is lower, that person can kick me into gear. Good luck to you!
