Warm colors for fall.
Tea length for early day wedding.
Do not go with a long formal gown being such a small service.
You can even go with a tailored skirt/jacket combo. I would still go tea length. If you are wearing straps or halter neckline wear get a matching wrap.
Here are a couple recommendations

October... A nice burgundy, or off gold dress. Or a nice flowery dress. Check J.Crew, Coldwater Creek, or Soft Surroundings websites and get an idea there.
Or a nice blue dress with pearls and mid heel. Something very simple and classy.

Since it is an afternoon fall wedding, a nice jacket and skirt set with maybe a silk tank or silk T top would be formal enough without going over the top. And accessorize! :)
Formalwear (like glitzy gowns) is usually reserved for night weddings.

Wear a fall colored dress. You don't have to wear a ball gown but a long dress would be nice or something Tea-length. Remember to bring a shawl.

One of those sunburst rings like Janet Jackson wore at the SuperBowl and a toothy smile...nothing else.

I would go with a nice pantsuit. It will be warmer, more comfortable, and you will still look great without going formal. Daytime weddings usually aren't that fancy.
