I am a teacher, and to encourage perfect attendance, would it be safe to swallow a goldfish in front of the school for perfect attendance? What harm would it cause? Thoughts? Any other ideas?

This is for perfect attendance for the ENTIRE school! Not just my class, so all the stuff that you have offered won't work (extra credit, etc.). Also, the chances of getting 100% is slim. Any other suggestions?

How would swallowing a goldfish encourage perfect attendance? I don't see any connection between a goldfish and attendance! Besides swallowing a goldfish might encourage/influence the students in doing the same thing & then that can lead to bigger problems. So... I don't think its a very good idea. Why not try something else like an end of the school year reward: like a trip to the movies or a park. Or why not give extra credit for perfect attendance. :) Besides i don't think seeing a live goldfish being swallowed by a teacher is not a pretty good sight for kids. Poor fish!

It is better to think in terms of doing something that requires courage and also does not harm life or degrade anyone. Offer to do a lot of push ups or to sing a song, etc. (or do a love scene with a muppet). These require effort and courage, but do not harm life. Our mission as teachers is always to do only those things that affirm the spirit and improve the students' sense of self-respect, and harming animal life rather compromises these worthy goals.

Where in the world did you get this idea? You really need to get out more. Goldfish swallowing contests are stunts and the fish don't survive.

Now THAT is dedication!
I don't think that it will harm you - although the goldfish will definitely not like the ride. I wouldn't do that for a 'prize' though.
Other ideas? hmmmm how about jumping into a pool (kiddie sized) with ice cubes? Coming to school with your clothes on backwards. Twinkies for lunch for a week. You'll do their homework for a week (now I like that one)

in the 1920's it was a popular fraternity practice. i would buy the fish several weeks in advance to ensure it is healthy and living in clean water though

i wouldnt recommed it, it may give the students the idea that they can shallow things that arent naturally suppose to me eattin. also if they do do it then you might get blaimed for it by parents.
