All dogs lick themselves. Some eat their own feces. Humans (most of 'em, anyway) do not. So how in the world can the mouth of a canine be cleaner than that of a person? Simple -- it can't.
According to ABC News, this is basically an urban legend. However, unlike the one about the psycho killer with the hook, this story has a grain of truth. Although the mouth of a typical dog is full of bacteria, it's "species specific." So, if a dog were to lick a person, most of the germs wouldn't transfer. "Bottom line -- you're more likely to get a serious illness from kissing a person than kissing a dog."
The myth may have stemmed from the way pups lick their wounds. A dog's tongue gets rid of dead tissue so wounds heal faster. Perhaps folks concluded that dog saliva is "healthy." Hardly the case, but you shouldn't be afraid of licks. They might be gross, but they're not dangerous.

Actually, the bacteria in a dog's mouth kills the garbage in the horrible stuff they eat. Which enables them to actually eat the crap that they do. Supposedly also this occurs after 8 seconds.
However, that does not exclude what may still be residing around their mouths, plus they really do have bad breath, and then there's the stuff that gets stuck in their teeth.
All things considered it's an animal. Why do people feel the need to allow an animal to lick your mouth, of all things? Hand ok..you can wash it - but your mouth, you use your mouth to ingest things into your system. You use your mouth to kiss other people - so the way I see it, unless you enjoy making out with your dog, you might want to avoid doing stuff like that, because you really don't know. Besides, do you really want your mouth touching the same thing that your dogs tongue does...like its butt?

no not really, when I go home to visit my family my moms golden retriever won't stop jumping up at me until I sit down at the second stair going to the upstairs so he can give me a hug and kisses, and he licks my face all over and I don't mind, he is just showing me that he is happy to see me, I scratch his back and his ears for a bit and then he gets down goes and gets his toy and lays down, sometimes he will come into my bedroom in the morning and lick my face as well, I usually hate that though because I don't want to be woken up by my dog licking my face, and yes dogs mouths are cleaner but it doesn't mean that their breath isn't just horrendous

When they say that dogs mouths are cleaner than ours it sorta means that their mouths kill germs better. If a dog has just licked themselves or eaten poop, it doesnt mean that the mouth is clean instantly, its still nasty. Its probably not the greatest idea to let them lick your lips, but its not going to kill you if it happens once in a while!

Weird? No. Sick, yes. I let dogs lick my hands but the face is off limits. Aside from the germs/slobber thing my face is my space and they need to respect that.

There saliva is more caustic to germs so that they can eat raw meat and stuff. I heard it's good for wounds to let a dog lick it.
I personally don't like dogs to lick me.
Update- That's very informative peewee, thanks :)
