"There are some people, and I'm one of them, that believe George Bush was placed where he is by the Lord," Tomanio said. "I don't care how he governs, I will support him. I'm a Republican through and through." (CNN online)

Do some people not have brains? Does religion just suck away critical thinking skills?

Religion does not necessarily suck away critical thinking skills (at least not at the same level as right-wing politics). Don't forget that the Church has a rather rich intellectual history (Augustine and Aquinas are still required reading on most college campuses, even today). Even the Fundamentalists occasionally spawn a good mind. In the quote you've provided above, yes, it would seem that religion is the problem. But consider that this is definitely a minority view, rather than that of the majority. The majority would be howling with laughter at such blatant foolishness. That's the thing with hardline Fundamentalists of any persuasion: they're in the minority.

I am part of the religious right, but that quote kind of scares me. I do think Bush was placed by the Lord (as every leader is given authority from God to govern over a part of His creation) but I still care what he does. Maybe Tomanio meant he doesn't care if Bush works 8am-8pm or 10am-10pm or something like that dealing with his personal style of governing. That stuff's not really important. You need to put the quote in greater context.

Yes, religion sucks away critical thinking skills. We just aren't all very good people, you see. There will always be these mediocre people that don't have a place in jail, college, or voting booths. Oh well.

Here is the biblical writing for what the author of the quote was talking about.

These verses state that all leaders (even the bad ones) are put into their positions by God for a specific reason. Yes, even Hitler and Castro. Just because we as humans do not understand the purpose behind this does not make it untrue. We are of finite minds trying to understand and put an infinite mind into a box that we can comprehend.

Romans Chapter 13
Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

Whosovever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shal receive to themselves damnation.

For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:

For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be aftaid; for e beareth not the sword n vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.

Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.

For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God;s ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.

Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

Owe no man anything, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.

The Religious Right uses their religion to get at the masses... and for the most part it works. Because, honestly, there's very few people who want to actually have their own "religion". They would rather have it handed to them, like everything else. "Would you like fries with that?"

He has a right to believe whatever he wants to believe, as does anybody. It's when government decisions are made according to those beliefs that it becomes scary.

Another quote that disturbs me: " I don't know that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This is one nation under God." --G.W. Bush

Rom 13:1 Let every soul be subject to higher authorities, for there is no authority except from God, but the existing authorities have been ordained by God.
Rom 13:2 So that the one resisting authority has opposed the ordinance of God, and the ones opposing will receive judgment to themselves.
Rom 13:3 For the rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the bad. And do you desire not to fear the authority? Do the good, and you will have praise from it;
Rom 13:4 for it is a servant of God to you for the good. But if you practice evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword in vain; for it is a servant of God, an avenger for wrath to the one practicing bad things.
Rom 13:5 Because of this, it is necessary to be subject, not only on account of wrath, but also on account of conscience.
Rom 13:6 For on this account you also pay taxes, for they are ministers of God, always giving attention to this very thing.
Rom 13:7 Then give to all their dues: to the one due tax, the tax; to the one due tribute, the tribute; to the one due fear, the fear; to the one due honor, the honor.

"Placed there by the Lord". Unbelievable. I have said it before Bush is the fanatics knight in shining armor. They are counting on him to stack the court so they can get a turn over of Roe Vs. Wade. They are counting on him to impede the progress of stem cell research. They are also counting on him to put the "definition of marriage" in the U.S constitution.

I did not vote for him. We need to get out and vote people!!!!!!!!!!!! We need to get every one we know out to vote!!!!!!!!!! How in the hell do you think I feel? I am in Texas, for God's sake. My vote hasn't counted here in quite a while. I am still out there doing my duty and registering my vote.
