The big bang theory is a term given to a pair of solutions to Einsteins General Theory of relativity which describes the expansion of the observable universe. The solutions are based on the assumption/observation that the universe is homogenious. That is that all points in space are roughly similar, that is that no point is to be preferred over any other point. These solutions were first obtained by Robertson, Walker and Friedman about the same time in the mid to late 1920s.

These solutions make many predictions which have been found to be consistent with observations.

One of the two solutions describes an infinite universe while the other describes a finite universe.

One of the many verified predictions from these solutions was that we should detect low frequency background radiation and this radiation has been discovered with properties consistent with predictions.

These models describe a universe where spacial distances between distant bodies is increasing with time. This is where the term big bang was coined from. If one goes back in time about 13.7 billion years or so one reaches a point where todays distances shrink to zero. This event was determined to be singular ( meaning that the mathematics of general relativity breaks down) by Hawking based on topological spacetime mathematics discovered by Roger Penrose. Currently a big area for cosmological research is investigating this event using various mathematical approaches.

Note that the Big Bang Theory is not really about origins of the universe it is rather a theory describing its expansion.

It says that some billions of years ago, a gaigantic body which had been hanging in the void for God knows time, just exploded. Scattering it contents into far distances of the universes. From it came the earth, and all the planets and galazies etc hanging like the exploded mother. In the near future, the earth is going to explode. This is going to be an end to life on earth and also begins a new form of life. This just a natural cycle of life.

How about you go here: http://www.badastronomy.com/intro.html
Or here:http://angryastronomer.blogspot.com/ and search for "big Bang"

The Big Bang theory is about how the universe was formed from a singularity that expanded. It did not simply produce matter and energy, but physical space and time as well. (This is a highly simplified description. See an astronomer for more details.)

Why ask this question in the R&S forum? Why not ask it at the Physics forum where you will certainly get more scientific and intelligent answers? What does the Big Bang theory have to do with religion?

Boom! Compact mass of matter and energy spontaneously flies apart in all directions, bumping and grinding into eachother as gravity makes them drift into eachother and form more explosions, or planets or stars or any type of early heavenly bodies. Right now everything is still flying apart, but some believe the universe expands and contracts and another big bang awaits our decendants in the distant future.

Once upon a time there was nothing, and the nothingness suddenly went bang. That's all I can figure, cause if there's no rocks, stars, meteors or anything to go bang in the first place, well, I'm just lost.

The Universe is expanding. Currently, all of the galaxies are moving away from each other...and away from a common center.

Now, pretend we paused everything and played it in REVERSE. All the galaxies would be moving inwards, towards each other, right? At some point, they would all get to the same point, and all of the matter and energy in the universe would be the size of a marble. Compressed, pure energy.

This little marble of pure energy is Time-zero of the universe. For some reason, this little single particle became unstable, and "blew up"...spreading all of the matter and energy in all directions. And here we are today.

That's the simple version. If you'd like, I can send you a DVD of the National Geographic Special I recorded the other night. It's "Naked Science: The Creation Of The Universe". Really interesting and well-described. Cool images, too. Just write me an email or whatever.

I can explain the fact that an explanation of everything was made--that an explanation was made by Godless man to explain how life as we know it appeared.
"BOOM" it was there.
Just like a child would explain it, illustrates the intellectual maturity of those who are partial to that view.

No quick explanation.

Basically, a tiny piece of super-dense, super hot matter blew up into what is the universe. Actually, the theory is that the explosion is still going on. The universe is still expanding, still exploding.
