Make sure he has a bottle, or a sippy cup, or a pacifier (or dummy, binkie, whatever you want to call it) to suck on so he can equalize the pressure in his ears.
If you can, try to travel at night, so he can sleep at least part of the way; and while you're waiting for your flight, run him ragged -- chase him around, take him exploring around the terminal, go watch the airplanes taking off and landing -- so he'll be good and tired once you board the plane.
Get him a couple of small, easily carryable new toys that can be his "travel toys" -- maybe even wrap them up and let him open them like presents (one every couple of hours) once the plane takes off. New toys will keep his attention longer.
Make sure he has his "snuggly" -- a favorite stuffed animal, a security blanket, or whatever -- to give him something to hold onto and help induce drowsiness.
Do NOT let him get out of his seat once the plane takes off -- if he realizes he can move about the plane, it'll be a constant struggle to keep him seated.

Give him a bottle as the plane take off OR let him have a pacifier just this once. I know he may be done with this but it helps with the ears. He'll probably sleep the majority of the flight. But bring his favorite toys and a new one (so he can be interested). Books of course. And something to calm him down with...there's nothing worse then a crying baby on a flight overseas. Let him get up and sit in your lap or walk a little bit if you can. Also, if you can get the front seats (in the normal seating) it has a lot of leg room and more room to move around in! I grew up going back and forth from the States to Germany or England, trust me. I have a son now and that's what I do. Good Luck and have a GREAT time!

While taking off and also landing have your little one suck on a pacifier(if he uses one), a bottle or even a sippy cup. I believe most pharmacies sell special ear plugs to help with the popping and pressure. I think they are called "Ear Planes". Good Luck!
As for toys, pretty much anything that interests him... playdough, crayons & paper, stacking blocks, favorite books, a portable dvd player and a favorite video...etc

my best tip to stop his ears hurting is , when he's screaming and crying and tired out, dont smack him on the side of the head also try picking him up under the arms for a change
To entertain him on the flight tell the captain that he is the child born of your drunken night cuddle on a stopover he had and your son can spend the whole flight in the cockpit with his new dad leaving you free to get some well earned kip
alternatively they have some great mobiles on planes, some people say they are masks in case you need oxygen, but i know kids love to see them drop out of the roof. you can usually organise this by hitting a window really hard
hope this helps

When lifting off & landing, make the baby drink something. The swallowing helps with the pressure on the ears.
As for entertainment, a book, a toy (no sound), whatever he likes at home. Make sure to bring some of his favorites.

i imagine in case you seem heavily on the placement you'll locate the soreness comes for the period of descent and under no circumstances for the period of climb. This has to do with the physics of the ear. the most efficient thanks to dodge soreness in the course of the descent is to chew gum. Pop in 2 or 3 sticks. do not wory about what human beings next to you imagine. the clarification that chewing gum enables is that an excellent variety of saliva is generated once you chew various sticks of gum and accordingly you swallow alot it really is what clears your ears.you'd be surprised at how efficient it really is. it really is so strong that the flight attendants used to pass out gum should you necessary it earlier the descent portion of a flight.which will quite get the interest performed. initiate chewing even as they allow you to recognize to prepare off your electronics. The plane is then at 10,000 feet even if the cabin is "pressurized" for roughly 8 thousand feet. The stress interior the cabin does no longer initiate to strengthen until eventually you pass below the cabin altitude, it really is 8000 feet. it really is the point soreness will initiate in case you're smooth. and under no circumstances get on a plane back and not using a clean %. of gum with you.

Does he have a bottle, a dummy or a trainer cup with a lid/lip? If he sucks on any of those while you take off and land it'll stop his ears popping. Crayons, travel sized magnetic games, favorite small toys should keep him occupied - but i find my children sleep when they fly, it must be the motion of the plane.

usually children are better in plane rides than adults and they dont go through much discomfort.... when ,the plane takes off n decends
you might try giving ur child something to suck on like candies or even a bottle of milk. the sucking motion helps the child to clear his ears and reduce pain if any.
you can also get air sickness medication for kids from a doctor to standby.... thats if ur child is prone to travel sickness or if its a long journey.

I am not sure if your breastfeeding or not, but that is suppose to be a lifesaver, while landing and taking off to be feeding him.
A little magnadoodle thing is great i use it in the car all the time, just try not to bring toys that make a lot of noise, you really don't want grumpy neighbours.
