What kind of dog is it? sometimes you can put them in a large cage depending on the dog when youre not around that way they dont destroy things. or maybe they need some toys.

First you never have to hit your dog. You do need to get him into a cage every time you leave but you are going to have to tran him first. Leave him in there a few times if you just need to step out. If you do catch him chewing on something just replace it with a chew bone or toy. And yes tell him NO firmly. Let him know that you are his master. Any dog that has a chewing problem. They will chew till they are at least 2 years old. But pitbulls and lab chew through their lives. So they need something to chew everyday. And walking is A BIG part in calming the chewing down. It sounds weird but all dogs need to releive stress. Rather it be running on the tread mile or walking.

Sounds like he has a little separation anxiety. Does he only do this when you are not at home? Talk to a good trainer, a really good trainer and provide him with plenty of good chew toys. Kongs filled with either peanut butter or with the products they have specifically used to fill these things. It will keep him busy for hours! Check out PetSmart, PetCo, etc. and they will be able to help you as well!!! Good luck and don't give up on the little guy! He's just probably bored!

I read to keep your dog confined to an area. I have an 8 WK puppy and she chew chew chews on everything. So they say keep them confined to a certain area, provide a chew toy, say no firmly and try bitter apple spray. I tried spraying it on my feet because she nips at my feet but it didn't work. Distract and Ignore.

He might be trying to get attention or throwing a tantrum. I have two Labs that will chew when they are angry at me. Sounds odd but they only misbehave if I have not spent enough time with them or have been not giving them the proper exercise. Since dogs can not communicate with us they often act out in other ways to get our attention.
They sell some sprays in pet stores that leave an awful taste in their mouth, it deters them from chewing. I used Bitter Apple when my dogs where puppies to get them from chewing the wrong stuff. They learned quickly to leave my things alone.
You might want to get your dog something to chew on like tendons (raw hide concept) to relieve frustration or boredom. Two other reasons dogs chew. And if he is only chewing when you are not around you may want to consider crating him.

I have a Shepard Mix like that. Hopefully she'll outgrow it. I think it is just some dogs get bored. I started to put mine in the cage during the day. I think she knew she shouldn't be getting into stuff but just couldn't help herself.

Buy his some rawhide chew bones. Dogs naturally chew --- it's what they do, especially before the age of 3. They aren't cheap, but then your furniture isn't either.....

everytime he starts to chew something he is not supposed to, firmly say "no!" then replace it with a chew toy. When he chews the toy, pet and congratulate him.

Is he used to being crated (pet bed)? when he chews on anything but his own toys, "ground" him for 5 or so min. show him his own toys when he comes out.
