I am assuming you are using Windows 2000 or XP, given you restore and this isn't a function of earlier versions of windows or of Mac OS, remember that windows rewrites to several points each time you use a program, and when this happens it can corrupt the system files or any other part of a program. If this is a specific program then it has become corrupt, and the best case is to uninstall it completely, and reinstall it after defraging, and running scandisk. This will make sure that if there are any bad sectors on the physical surface of the disk, and make sure you don't try reinstalling to the same sector.

There could also be a chance that the hard drive is bad and not writing correctly, running scandisk will help, but if you have norton utilities or some other system tool you can detect bad drives and other hardware problems.
See if the reinstall fixes the problem, if not check with the place you purchased your computer from and have them check it out.

could just be a bug in the software or whatever program you are running.....try uninstalling it and then putting it back on

possible overheating problem......open up your pc and clean out all dust/hair. maybe look into getting another computer fan.

may have too many programs open at the same time and your processor cant deal with them

does the program contain complex graphics like a game? you may not have a graphics card or maybe you have an old one.

if its a large word doc or a large file in general in a program that you have open then try splitting it into two separate files and run them at the same time.

go at a steady pace and give your pc a chance i.e. don't go clicking your mouse all over the place and repeatedly on the same button because you willl simply confuse the pc.

get rid of old files that you will never use again.

in internet options (when you are on the internet click tools), click on delete cookies, delete files, and clear history. regularly.

download a spyware program for free of the internet. .......go to google and search for 'Ad-Aware SE Personal' download this program and run once a week after updating its file definitions (it will prompt you to update)

Just a few pointers for you to go over

good luck ( i know how frustrating PCs can be because im an IT technician)

in my experience, this has all the symptoms of a hard drive problem, either a missing dll(dynamic link libary) or a explorer problem
but seeing as you have tried system restore and this has not fixed it ,this is unlikely
is your hard drive making any noises, such as scrapping or whining,as i am thinking you may have a drive failure, but this again is unlikely after only 6 months
you have said its virus free, but have you done a spyware scan, the 3 programs i recommend are spybot(http://www.safer-networking.org/),adaware(http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/)
and ewido(http://www.ewido.net/en/)
install and run these and see if you uncover any nasty spyware,as these can cause errors
you havent said when the errors happen,if its while using internet explorer, changing your browser to firefox(http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/),will help
all of the not responding errors are caused by software incompatibilitys, and from the xp operating system, even after all these years xp still has problems with bugs, the only way to fix these is to keep your updates on automatic and if its a programs fault go to the program makers website and look for a patch or fix to patch the error
windows dosent make the errors, its the software thats imcpmpartible with windows
for more info on this problem go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/228222/en-us,this will give you detailed info on this,if you have any problems understanding it,let me know by e-mail
good luck

could be u have a virus, a good free virus checker is AVG http://www.grisoft.com/doc/1
also get a spy killer there are 2 good ones for free,
Spybot
http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10122137.html
and Ad-Aware SE
http://www.adwarealert.com/index.php?hop=advanced99&p=3&gid=1072645447&oid=&aid=
down load both of them and run them they are very good.
the only other thing is to re install the program that gives the error message

Go to microsoft and check for updates and repairs. Had the same problem on my laptop. Free antivirus and anti spyware from microsoft website sorted the problem.

Which programs are not responding? Some programs hang but don't cause a problem.
