I have some eggs that are 5 days past the sell by date... can I eat them?

Absolutely, unless you're storing them in a hot location (sunny window, oven). A "sell by" date is not a "use by" date. Eggs, for example, can be used weeks later with proper storage. Older eggs give better results in many recipes. If you can smell, bad eggs are obvious as soon as you crack them. Age is not the only factor. When in doubt, crack eggs one at a time into a separate cup, dish, or bowl to check and then add them to your recipe.

Eggs last a long time past the date on the carton, as do many other items. If you have kept them in the refrigerator, you should have no problem with a month after dated time. There's no way of telling if they are bad until you break them open. And believe me you'll know. When a rotten egg hits the frying the pan,,,,,it's very bad. Stinks up the whole house....and the smell lingers.

If they've been refrigerated then they shouldn't be bad at all. I've used eggs a week or two past the sell date

they say that you should keep your eggs for about a week. after that throw them out. they're cheap anyway. or next time buy the 1/2 dozen instead.

If they smell good, they are good. Just cook thoroughly, as you normally should.
