I have some family that believes that. I've thought about it but I think it's mostly because of bad financial choices.

No evidence whatsoever. What a brilliant scare tactic, though. "Give us your money or our Lord shall smite thee, and thine wealth will be as water in a desert... evaporated".

Yikes, why not just arm wrestle for the cash, at least that way people won't be scared out their mind, agonizing about whether god will dry up their life savings.

Hurry! Make haste and tithe 10% of your gold and livestock to the church, lest ye anger the gods!!!

Just joking. Try putting 10% of your income in a ROTH IRA or maybe just a simple mutual fund. In about 25 years you will have a nice nest egg.

If you give it to the church you might only end up with a new parking lot or some new bibles.

If you can not pay your bills cursed finances. Tithing is a Bill/tax to attend that church. And then you should give away another 5% of income in seed money

Titheing is under the law (OT) ... the new testament (NT) is under grace.... tithing was to support the priests and the temple... in the NT, we are the priests and the temple..... only free will offereings were mentioned in the NT, but not tithes.

I did not tithe for 20 years and I was fine. When I started to pay them, because that is what was expected of me, i had nothing but finanical problems. I lost more than I gave... which is the opposite of the prosperity message they push these days.

A former co-worker of mine swears that his finances were cursed when he did not pay his tithes. Seeing as how I don't have all the answers, I can't really say that he was wrong. But I do think that he was overlooking the possibility of coincidence. I mean, just because two things happen simultaneously does not mean they are happening as a result of one another.

This is something that gets preached to scare you out of your money.....if you read the old testament (where they love to go for this) you will see that tithe was always FOOD not money. and it was to be used to feed the poor not buy the pastor a nicer car!!! I'm an ex-christian, I went through alot of spiritual abuse before I realized what was really going on. Ive been away from that stuff for 5 years now and my finances have never been better!! :)

Just another blackmail tactic for churches to rake in your hard earned dollars.

I've heard rich believers claim their wealth was due to being blessed for tithing, instead of being in business and cheating their fellow man. They loved to say "You can't outgive the lord".

Strangely enough, I found that I could.

Read the story of Cain and Abel. If you don't give willingly, then you might as well not give at all. There is no "curse" for not tithing, and anyone who tells you there is, is misinformed!

I don't know about curses, but I do think there is evidence that your thything will be blessed by God.

I am sharing this story not to elevate myself, but I hope that in reading it you will see the generosity and absolute love of God. I had stopped thything during a 3 month period or so about 2 years ago when I found out that I was going to lose my job. My job at that time was already only $900 per month (ie $10,800 per year)--before taxes--and every month was gift to get by without going under. God kept me afloat during that job because He knew that I took it to honor him, He knew that I thythed with what little I had, and He always took care of me. When the time approached when I would have no job, I was terrified. Of course, with $900 per month I had nothing saved up. I was so depressed. I felt like such a failure. I felt so personally rejected every time I heard back from an interview. If that wasn't enough, my grandfather to whom I was pretty close was dying. But I couldn't cry--about anything--I was so depressed it was like I was just walking through life.
One day while I was making a turn, I passed by a homeless man begging on the corner. I guess it sort of hit me then: the only difference between me and him was quite possibly a few weeks and some generous family members who might take pity on me. I pulled over and walked to the median. As I handed him a 20, I was sobbing. It was the first time I could cry about everything--it was the first time I was able to let it out. I think maybe he thought I was crazy. He said something to me like, "Let me walk you back to your car." and he did. I really can't remember what else he may have said. I felt so relieved to be able to cry, and I felt so honored that God would have given me the opportunity to give in this way--I mean, I never would have known that I was capable of that--I wouldn't have believed it even though it was about myself. But God gave me that as a gift. And you know what? After job searching for 9 months straight, I got 3 job offers in 1 week--the week following that gift--see? You can't outdo God in generosity--although I didn't quite know it at the time. And had I waited to give that man money until after I recieved a job offer, think how much less honor that gift brought to God. I think of it kind of like the lady in temple that Jesus pointed out gave less than the rich man, but gave all that she had. I thank God for the opportunity to use His gift of money to me to help others around me. I hope it pleases Him. And I hope that if I am homeless like the man I met, that someone else--even if they have very little--will share with me.
Thank you for listening. God Bless!

Its not biblical. Whoever told you that was lying. You only tithe as sign of love to God.Giving just 10% of your income. If you dont want to give you dont have to.Gods not forcing you.
